Keep gutters free flowing:

Gutters and downspouts are very important for exterior control of water. If gutters, leaders and downspouts are clogged water will run over the gutter and pool next to the exterior foundation walls of the dwelling. Downspouts should be extended so they discharge at least five feet away from the exterior of the building. Overflowing gutters can cause significant problems including flooding in the lower level or basement. Use a ladder and clean the gutters and leaders from one side to the other side of the home. Flush the gutters, leaders and spouts and make sure they are free flowing. If they are clogged the obstruction can usually be removed by taking apart the different sections of the piping to get closer to the obstruction. The spray should be enough to dislodge the obstruction. Consider installing gutter guards in order to help keep debris out. Stay away from the screen gutter guards. This type of guard tends to let debris in even when they are maintained in place. Dried out leaves and other organic debris can fall apart and go through the small holes in the screen type guards. A much better but more expensive alternative is the louver style gutter guards. The louvers allow water to travel into the gutters and keep leaves and other organic debris out. Good information. Just today I saw damage to a fascia board caused by a clogged gutter.
