Update:  88 Pearl Street sold for $525,000 after receiving 10 offers.  I look forward to the transformation!

Calling all contractors and old house enthusiasts! This 1820s house at 88 Pearl Street in Cambridge Massachusetts is on the market for the first time in over sixty years.

Antique green house in Cambridge MA

If "old and untouched" is what you look for - you'll want to check out 88 Pearl Street.  There's still some nice vintage detail here - paneled doors, built-ins, some wide board floors, front and back staircases, and ladder like stairs to an attic.

Developers and contractors will find a lot to like here. This is the perfect project for the spring market! The house is configured as a two-family and lends itself to condos.  Alternatively it could be converted to a single family home.  The rooms are large and very sunny.  The City of Cambridge gives the approximate living area as 2380 sq. ft.

No mistake about it - the house needs a lot of work.  Some things have been taken care of though - the furnace was new in 2002, the leaking roof was replaced in 2008, and the windows have been replaced.

The current room layout has four large rooms and two baths on the first floor and five rooms with one bathroom on the second floor. There is off-street parking for 2 - 3 cars.

This is a super location - just blocks from the heart of popular Central Square, MIT is just down the street, Harvard is one subway stop away on the Red Line, and the Charles River and Boston are nearby.

88 Pearl Street is new to the market and priced at $475,000.

Elizabeth:  What a great home... just waiting for either a make-over... or restoration/updating.  When I saw your comment about being "old and untouched"... I of course thought about myself... LOL.

Hi Karen ~ You're too funny! I'll remember that one believe me.  "Old and untouched" houses are what ring my bell for sure.  This one is really wonderful - I imagine it will be transformed into something very different in the end.

Hi Joe ~ Thanks! It's proving to be very popular.  We used to see a lot of these in Cambridge - not so many nowadays.

Cool listing, Liz. I know exactly where that is - sold a home on Pearl not long before I left the area. What a classic - someone could really have fun. Good luck.

GOOD MORNING LIZ!  My niece is in her first year at MIT - this might be a nice place for a few college parents to get together and fix up a place for their kids for the next few years of living.  Congrats on the listing! -- Gab

Hi Jeff ~ We don't see as many of these nowadays. It's not the typical two-family configuration so there's a number of ways to transform it.  I love houses like these.

Hi Gabrielle ~ Central Square has become a very popular neighborhood - Harvard in one direction, MIT in the other, not to mention Boston.  I bet your niece will have a wonderful stay here - though she'll certainly work hard!

Hi Karen ~ You and me both!  I love the old detail. When I got one of the closets emptied out I discovered beautiful wide board floors with what I imagine are hand cut nails.  There are other wide board floors in a room or two but the ones hidden in the closet looked like the earliest generation of floor boards in the house. Really neat.

Liz, that looks like a really cool house. I also love the built in shelf and dresser.  It adds so much character. If walls could talk, imagine the history in a house that old? I think if I were restoring it, I would try to find some old original blueprints of it or tax records and frame them, just to keep the history with the house. Good luck with the sale of it!
