Re: Unauthorized Credit Inquiry

Dear American Express,

I recently received a copy of my Equifax credit report. The credit report showed a credit inquiry by your company that I do not recall authorizing. I understand that you shouldn't be allowed to put an inquiry on my file unless I have authorized it. Please have this inquiry removed from my credit file because it is making it very difficult for me to acquire credit.

I have sent this letter certified mail because I need your prompt response to this issue. Please be so kind as to forward me documentation that you have had the unauthorized inquiry removed.

If you find that I am remiss, and you did have my authorization to inquire into my credit report, then please send me proof of this.

Thanking you in advance,

How often does this occur, IE when someone or some company checks your credit without permission?  I start thinking about identity fraud whenever I see this type of stuff...

Hello Kaushik,

I couldn't tell you how often it occurs, sorry.  Fraud is certainly a concern.  I've seen this to be helpful when raising a score by just a few points makes a significant change in the approval and mortgage rate.  Anytime your credit is pulled, they are required to have written permission.  If you didn't grant written permission, then you can get the inquiry removed.

That is disturbing to say the least.  I have heard of car salesman pulling credit without the knowledge of the prspective buyers.

Great letter.  We should all take the time to look at our credit report and also to follow up with items like this.
