Del Webb's Sun City Arizona is turning 50!!! Get ready for the celebration!

So much has changed since Del Webb broke ground on the original Sun City, a community that would forever change people's idea of how retirement living should be. At the time, Sun City was an oasis out in the middle of the AZ desert with nothing around for miles.

What Del Webb was exceptional at, was creating the vision. Before breaking ground on the first home he made sure people saw the dream, capturing spectacular views and giving people resort-style living. Club houses and golf courses were strategically planned out and put into place so the future residents knew what to expect the day they moved into their new home. While he wasn't the one to create the concept, he IS the one who created the benchmark of success other builders hope to obtain.

"Del Webb's Sun City was created with a very simple premise: Retirement should be about staying active, involved, and engaged. His vision was (by providing amenities like golf, bowling, tennis and dozens of other sports) residents could hang onto their youth. Now, 50 years later, Sun City and that vision for a better retirement have survived the test of time. Sporting activities are still at the core of the community's success." Excerpt from RSCS publication Sun Views.

Sun City is turning 50 and the year long festivities begin with the Grand Opening Ceremony on December 9th, 2009. Stay up on the planned activities by visiting the Sun City Visitors Center website and the Recreation Centers of Sun City website.

Wow, 50 years.  I can remember as a teenager, when they first opened.  Del Webb (now Pulte homes) was way ahead of their time.

Edward & Celia - Thank you for your observation!  Yes, it's hard to believe it's been 50 years.  It's amazing to think of all the changes that have taken place in that time-frame.

And Sun City was NOT the first retirement community either.

Youngtown is five years older.

You are absolutely right Bil.  The Sun City communities though are probably some of the best known.
