Storm Warnings on your computer

By

I've got the coolest tool on my laptop.  It's called the weather channel desktop.  Now what sits down in the bottom corner of the screen looks like this:

So as I'm just typing away, all of a sudden I hear, a thunderstorm, except it's not coming from outside, it's coming from my computer.  Except the first time I hear it, I don't realize it's actually emanating from my computer.  The second time I hear it, my attention is drawn to the fact that the little box registering the temperature has turned yellow and is flashing at me!  So I clicked on it, and this is what I see next:

About 5 minutes later, it is raining cats and dogs outside, but I got enough of a head up to let my garage down and put my windows up!  How cool it that?

I hear the thunderstorm in my computer again and it's telling me next that it is severe lightning as well.

Now I don't know about you, but our main office gets hit by lightning every year, and the office staff is always scrambling to get all the computers unplugged.  So having that on my laptop allowed me to just unplug it and keep on working today.  And probably saved me from having to buy a new laptop as well. Because that lightning hit right outside my house, and I about came out of my skin!

weather desktop

I downloaded the program about two months ago, it is free, and a life saver or at least a computer saver.

Now because it's free, I don't doubt that it's adware/spyware of some sort, but at a low level according to my PC-cillin.

Florida it the lightning capital, so if anyone is interested I highly recommend it.  It also gave me hurricane updates 2 weeks ago, and flashes at you when there is a new weather update.

And you can also get weather updates on your phone.  I got that a couple of years ago after I was showing property and decided to bypass a property because it was more convenient to see it on the way back as I would be on that side of the highway.  Well on the way back as I turn into the subdivision, people were standing and walking around in the street like a scene from dawn of the dead.  So I cautiously asked someone who didn't look too dazed why everyone was outside.  Well, apparently a tornado water spout had come through there.  Because I was talking while showing property I didn't have the radio on because it is too distracting sometimes.  So I didn't know there was even one in the area.  Scarey right?

Well we live in the age of technology, so you can get a voice mail or a text message right to your phone whenever there is severe weather out there.  So stay safe while your are out there improving our economy!

Hi Karen,

The Weather Channel download does sound neat.

I'm a little concerned about your comment: "...the office staff is always scrambling to get all the computers unplugged..."

As an added precaution you might want to consider a good surge protector.

Take care.

Don't be concerned, Wish I could say it wasn't so, but our office is a lightning rod!!!  They have installed supposedly the best of surge protectors, but a surge protector mean nothing when your building takes a direct hit.  All you smell is smoke from the remnants of what once was a  surge protection system.  The office staff scrambles at the hint of lightning coming our way, and they scramble to get everyones computers who isn't in the office unplugged from the walls.  To protect them.  They even did something to our roof  (I forgot what) to help.  Didn't work.  Building was hit again last month, and no phones and no computers, no internet.

I sat in my car one evening when it was storming and vidio taped the lightning bolts over our building.  It was incredible, so much so that I was counting the lighting bolts.  When it reached in the 50's in less than 10 minutes, I took the hint and left.  But got incredible video on my phone.

While I don't like to speak in absolutes, because anything can be.  I will say that I have virus protection software installed.  And it just did a full scan of my computer on Friday, and my weather desktop wasn't removed or identified as a problem.  But anything that's free will have to be supported by ads, and I always see 1 ad in the bottom corner, so......
