Eagle Harbor on Fleming Island Florida is a great place to live and recently we witnessed one of the reasons - the caring nature of the residents. We brake for turtles!
One day a few weeks ago, while driving from our home in Eagle Harbor to the Watson Fleming Island office, I noticed something in front of me on the road. Other cars and a golf cart had already stopped. A fairly large turtle was crossing the road, going from a pond on the golf course to another pond surrounded by homes.
As we edged closer, the turtle retreated its head a bit and 'hopped' a couple of steps. What? I had never seen a turtle do this, but a man commented, "That's what they do." I'm not sure this is proper turtle mobility, but will do in an emergency - and having people watching you walk across the street probably constitutes a turtle 'emergency.'
Cameras were out, we were in awe, respectfully watching the creature as it made its way safely across the street under the curious 'supervision' of the Eagle Harbor residents. There was not one car that honked or cross word, even though we slowed down traffic on Eagle Harbor Parkway for about 5-10 minutes. Someone wanted to 'help' the turtle but was wisely cautioned to leave it alone. Snapping turtles have very long necks and can do some serious damage to anyone in range of their beak-like mouth.
The turtle is safely off the road on the way to the next pond. Life returns to normal as we go on our way, but what a fun break in the day and what great neighborhood camaraderie!
Other wildlife that can be found crossing our streets, and Eagle Harbor residents slow down to let them pass. It's just another reason why life on Fleming Island in Eagle Harbor is just great!
