Medford and I are here this morning on my front porch, in the Real World of old Saint Paul, where it is currently 69ºF, with a predicted high of 90ºF. We are enjoying our porcelain, not china, but made in China, Codger Collectible Mugs of organically & shade-grown, fair-trade, Sumatran-Roast coffee.

While we are still interested in Codger Lady & Codger cyberspace spottings, we decided to present you with another short photo-essay from a nice walk we took yesterday—again on the riverfront of Old Saint Paul, and featuring two very different, but historically significant bridges.

The Great Western Bridge (Chicago & Great Western Railroad Mississippi River Crossing) was built in 1913.

The Robert Street Bridge, begun on June 19, 1924, and completed and dedicated on August 6, 1926. The bridge was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989.

Good morning Codgers!  Nice post and pictures.  You guys amaze me.  You have more energy than I do.  I'm out the door to take Mom to surgery this morning.  Nothing extremely serious but anytime they're administering anesthesia and cutting into you, I'd say prayers are in order.  Please keep us in yours!

oh crap!! No more fruits??

I love bridges! I have some photos of the bridges here, I like to try to take them around sunset when the sun adds some pink hue to them.
The history you've provided is awesome! I'm glad they aren't tearing down the old ones and building new ones in their place. The architecture of things built in the early 1900s is fascinating to me, and I think looks better then a lot of things built now.

Man, I miss our fruit!

Broker Maggie: But we’re retired, and within some limits, we determine our own daily schedules!

Lysa: We don’t much like the new “Capsha” as it is hard to read for ancient eyes.

WOW! we tried to edit our comment, but weren't able to--said we didn't enter the CAPSHA thing--but didn't provide one for us to use! The edit we tried to make was a suggestion to look at the spectacular photos of the Great Western Bridge on that web page.

The bridge picts are great.  I would have told you sooner, but the new system stinks.  I can't even post on the official AR blog to let them know their catsup is broken.

Bridges  Going over bridge

I was thinking about your bridges on a recent trip and took these pics for you.  Sorry they didn't turn out better, it's hard to get good pics in the rain at 70 mph!  (No fear, hubby was driving while I took these.)

George: “YEP the fruits are back...........a lot of fruits on AR :)” I think you’re half-right—Fruitcakes! Of which we are charter members!

Sarah: “it's hard to get good pics in the rain at 70 mph!” Not a bad job—neat bridges. I also like the windshield-wiper in the photo, it adds a bit of candid-ness to the photo.

Lysa: “LOL Catsup! Too funny Chris!” That cracked me up as well.

Bob: “...they add so much character to the countryside.” Indeed…and sometimes they’re even helpful.

Hey Codgers--I lived from the time I was born until the 2nd grade on the other side of Robert St. Bridge from downtown St. Paul. We used to walk across the bridge into downtown to meet my dad who worked at the Emporium. I was afraid of the big arches. (I thought my brother would try to climb them and fall off or something...hey I was only 5.) I still am amazed at the beauty of the bridge every time I cross it! Beautiful photos! Thanks for sharing.

Teri: Your comment brought back some memories; "Emporium," " The Golden Rule" (later "Donaldson's"), "W.T. Grant," "Schueneman's" (later "Dayton-Schueneman's," "Dayton's," "Marshall-Field's," now "Macy's")--all but Macy's now gone. The heyday of downtown shopping in St. Paul! Don't get me started on the first-run movie theaters, all now gone!

Lisa: That's a spectacular bridge! thank you,

Jay
