Obamacare or Clark Howard health care which one is better for America?

On the same day that President Obama gave his latest health care speech to America, consumer warrior Clark Howard came out with his own ideas for health care.  While Obama carried on and on for nearly an hour about all his fabulous ideas, Clark Howard sticks to the K.I.S. principle (Keep It Simple).

Clark Howard's speech: Listen to it OR Read it.

Now the main thing I do agree with President Obama about is that something needs to change.  Obama made a great statement about "being determined to be the last" President to take up health care reform.  Good for him. Something needs to change and it needs to change now.

What I don't like about Obamacare is how he plans on going about it.  Somehow he thinks that he can root out billions of dollars in government waste. He also thinks a public option will actually be financially solvent.  Seriously, who does he think he is kidding? Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, Medicare, Social Security, the Post Office, government run public schools, etc., are all insolvent and riddled with fraud, waste, and inefficiency. China and the United Nations are talking about abolishing the U.S. dollar and going with an international currency.  I know Obama is not a stupid man, so I am mystified how he thinks some new giant government program will actually avoid becoming a giant economic alligator.

Obama's plan does address the important issues about getting the insurance for the uninsured, pre-existing conditions, and supposedly reducing costs. However it doesn't talk about obvious fixes like tort reform, buying insurance across state lines, allowing trade associations and chambers of commerce to offer group rate health care to individuals, requiring the medical industry to provide upfront pricing, and getting away from the 3rd party payer system.  His plan wants to perpetuate the idea that health care is everyone else's responsibility except the individual (i.e. your employer or your government will take care of it for you). Apparently the President doesn't understand that small business and the government already can't afford to pay for everyone's health care now.

Clark Howard on the other hand is all about the free market. Increasing competition.  Making pricing for healthcare much more transparent.  After all what other industry besides the medical field can't give you a price quote on services until after they do the work? Talk about a bunch of nonsense.

Listen to both President Obama and to Clark Howard, then you be the judge on which plan is more realistic and fair to all.

You make a lot of sense.  Too bad most people will just go along with the President, and not read your blog, which does address very important points.  Also, in that bill is too much government control over us.  That's the big issue for me.  Thanks for the blog.

Clark got some things really right...  I actually wrote about some of that a while ago.  People keep saying that the free market failed, but the free market has never existed in health care...  At least not in the last 50 years.

Rob - I have heard many of Clark Howard's proposals and agree with most of them. There have been a few dialogues back and forth with Clark, Neal Boorts and Herman Cain. They make some terrific points that have a lot more sense than the current administration proposals.

The solution really is to keep it simple.  If the President simply would have said, "We are going to allow people that want to to buy into Medicare before they are 65 to do so", who would have a problem with that?  No mandate, no government takeover, nothing that could get people all shook up.  That would provide coverage for all, and would be simple to implement because the program is already in existence.  The debate I guess is just too complex for people to understand, and leads to fear and frustration.  Keep it simple.  Just allow people who don't have insurance or want it to buy into Medicare before they are 65.  Simple

I spent hours researching my family insurance options and whatever I found is terrible. It is really expensive. And deductible and out of pocket are very high. For me new law is very frustrating. And you'll be punished for not to buying it?! 7 mln of people in California only have NO insurance.

Looking back at this blog 4+ years later. It is truly sad to see what happened with the healthcare law. So disappointing. Prices have skyrocketed and the middle class has been fleeced yet again.
