When is it too early to start looking?
Here's the story that many of us Realtors have had to deal with. I was recently referred a couple from a family member who are interested in buying a home in South Florida when they retire. They have no idea what Florida has to offer them, so they would like to see their options.
My first response is, of course, "what is your wish list in a home?" They proceed to give me the laundry list of their "perfect Florida home". Then we discuss the timeline on when they would like to relocate. The answer...mid 2011! That's where I have to ask myself "when is it too early to start looking?!"
After the shock, I thought more about what they needed. These customers needed information, and if I am not going to give it to them, someone else will! This will be an exploration for them and help them make decisions for their future. They had many questions and were curious as to what areas of South Florida might be a better fit than others.
I answered their questions and explained the issues surrounding looking so early such as price differences, and they were very understanding and appreciative. We will be looking at homes for 2 days, while they are here in Florida. I will stay in contact with them to update them on local changes.
I think if we all took a minute to realize that working with customers when they are not necessarily ready to buy, can be beneficial to them as well as you, as it shows that you are willing to go that extra mile.
