Ok. I confess, I don't actually get social media. I can see some of the the value of facebook by being more "in your face" with friends and family who you may never see. but what's up with all these fake gifts I keep receiving. A cartoon flower. An invite to Farmville?
Can someone explain it to me? I mean, why do I care what someone is eating for lunch, unless I'm sitting with them and may want a bite? Or, that they're off to wash their hair? Huh? Nope...don't care about that either.
Just seems like a bunch on inane chatter and there are enough voices in my head without the added distraction of random disassociated banter.
It seems like some people are completely addicted by the number of times they post. Wouldn't their life be a little more fulfilling if they were out enjoying life instead of glued to their electronic device? I say this as I sit in my office vowing to get away from my computer.
Just last night I helped my husband create his Facebook account so he could share some photos with his high school buddies. He did this under protest because he doesn't get it either. Yet, a part of me wondered if I was introducing him to a new drug..Facebook crack...and I hoped he didn't get sucked in.
This morning he had several friend requests from people he's never heard of. He shouted from the other room, "Hey Honey...what do I do with these people who want to be my friend but I'm not sure who they are?"
I said "Ignore them".
"What? That seems kinda rude."
"No, really. Click 'ignore'."
And there you have it. It's perfectly ok to ignore people. It's perfectly ok to share your thoughts that people may or may not care about (I guess that's what I do with my blog too). It's perfectly ok to sit across from a living, breathing human being while carrying on a text conversation with someone who is somewhere else. That's being "social" in 2009. It all makes me a little bit uncomfortable.
