It's time for the Blue Pumpkins.

We are a family that likes pumpkin. A little Pumpkin can go a long way. But the best pumpkins for eating are not the Orange ones you get for decoration. The best Pumpkins for eating are Blue Pumpkins. There are all sorts of Pumpkins, Red, White, Blue (very American type food), and even Orange. There may be more I am unaware of.

The Blue Pumpkin actually looks kind of gray, but who wants a gray pumpkin? The Blues have more meat than all the rest.

My wife gets the Pumpkins and slices them in quarters, cooks them in the oven, scraps out the meat, purees it in the food processor and freezes it.

There is nothing better than a true homemade pumpkin pie, but we also have pumpkin cookies, pumpkin cake, pumpkin bread, pumpkin fritters, pumpkin soup (several types), and other great dishes. One pumpkin can go a long way.

If you want you do not have to puree it all. My wife has fried some too. Not bad, but not the family favorite. I really like the savory soup recipes (rather than the sweeter soups).

Might be able to get my wife to share some recipes with us, but go on line there are a lot of good ones; that's what my wife does.

Okay you got me. I don't think I've seen a blue pumpkin or maybe I did and had no idea what it is. Now I'll be on the prowl as you are right real pumpkin makes the best pie.

Now read again, Blue Pumpkins is what they are called. They look more gray in color. You may have to ask the produce manager about them or go to a produce stand that actually carries them.

I just bought some blue pumpkins at Harry's Market on Hwy 54 in White Cross outside of Chapel Hill, NC. Though not bright or deep blue, more grayish-greenish-blue, I have made some folks smile by giving these to them. They are pretty cool.

Sharon I do not know if they are grown locally to you. We have them local. The real joy of a Blue Pumpkin is in the eating of them. My wife bought three this year and is in the process of baking them and getting all the meat out. Most will be frozen for use during the year. Soup, Bread, Pancakes, Pie, etc . . .

Pumpkin is my favorite ... I love pretty much everything pumpkin. I'd like to find a blue pumpkin and make soup.

Kathleen I would ask for a Blue Pumkin in the producs section of better supermarkets. They might order them for you if they do not carry them. Also try some Produce Stands. The are actually more greyish looking than blue. We get a lot of pumpkin out of each one and end up freezing it. Pumpkins can also set along time (months) and still be good when you open them.

Adrian - They taste just like any other pumpkin - but there is more meat in them. The actual taste of pumpkin has many variables, just like most fruits and vegitables.
