Name that Snake

By

Found this little guy in Haile Plantation this afternoon.

Referencing this way cool handy-dandy chart with full-color photos (after our whole wrangling episode) leads me to believe it could be a green garter snake.

What kind of snake do YOU think it is?

That looks to be a common rat snake. When you touch them they really let off a funky odor (musk) as part of their protection.

I should have said common gray rat snake. When you touch them they really let off a funky odor (musk) as part of their protection. They are quite harmless unless you are a frog, lizard, insect or whatever...

I know it's not a Pigmy Rattlesnake--I saw one of those in my yard when I lived in Florida.

Sheesh....I hate snakes.  But at least this was a "good snake".  My hubby says their no such thing as a good snake.....except a dead snake.

Norma - Glad to hear it wasn't a rattlesnake....pygmy or otherwise.  :)

Chris - There must be something wrong with me. I've always liked snakes.  Those palmetto bugs, though.....UGH!!!

Coleen...

I thought that it looked like a black racer but it is probably a rat snake like Michael said ... absolutely NOT venomous!

No thanks snakes aren't my favorite guys!  I've run into too many dangerous snakes here in AZ  while out hiking. Scary at times.  This little guy seemed harmless - and you sure had fun, now didn't you!!

I would have been a lot farther away than you guys! I'm with Chris' hubby on this one. The only good snake is a dead snake. "No fear Coleen"... now I know who to call when I have a snake!

Coleen, I've always liked snakes and had them as pets when I was a kid.

Michael-you probably got it right but, I thought it might be a kind of Garter snake, there are several different kinds and this looks very similar to one.

Richard - Thanks for stopping by. Don't think it was a black racer because this sucker had a lot of green in him....quite a pretty guy!  Hubby escorted him out of our pool area with a big broom when he got home from work.

Anna - You're right....I totally had fun! LOVE my new FlipVideo....with my Flip, and my iMovie09, and my snake.....well, I'm thinking I made magic happen.  :)  (hee hee)

Allison - No no! No snake killing! They are so AWESOME....eating unwanted rodents and such.  I guess maybe I should be more scared of them...but all I want to do is pick them up.  But I don't. Wouldn't be prudent. Not a good example for the kids.  Look forward to meeting you one of these days! :)

Nick - I always wanted a snake when I was a kid, but the parental units totally didn't go for it.  I changed my mind though when a friend of mine who had a snake for a pet told me how he had to feed him "pinkies" (frozen dead baby mice? seriously?  ACK!)  That pretty much did it for me. I'm still enthralled whenever I see them outside, though.  :)

Hi Dedra - Yeah, I'm thinking it might have been a garter snake....really pretty colors.  Not sure skeeters would satisfy the big guy....he did seem intent on snagging some lizards, though.
