Rudy is one of our families favorite sports movies. It is a movie about the dream of Rudy Ruettiger who wanted to play football at the University of Notre Dame.

One of my favorite scenes is when Rudy had been told he would be able to dress for one of the games his Sr. Year by Notre Dame Head Coach, Ara Parseghian, only Ara Parseghian is no longer head coach of Notre Dame and is replaced by Coach Dan Devine.

It becomes apparent that Coach Devine is not going to let Rudy dress for one home game. The Sr’s one by one walk into Coach Devines office and lay their jerseys on the coaches desk. They were a team and knew how hard Rudy had worked and wanted to see him dress for the last game.

RudyYou’ll have to see the movie, a classic to find out what happens.

Grap your hankies….

But, a more important situation this week occurred that reminded me of the movie Rudy.

The White House invited the Press Pool to interview the Pay Czar Kenneth Feinberg concerning his announcement he was cutting the pay of executives at 7 companies.

The Press Pool is made up of 5 Major News organizations, CNN, ABC, CBS, NBC, and FOX.

Only one issue:

Fox News was not invited to the interview.

In a small victory for Freedom of Speech, the rest of the Press Corps, standing together said if FOX was not allowed to attend the interview, they would boycott the interview in protest.

The White House, (like Dan Devine) eventually relented and all five Major News Organizations were allowed to interview Pay Czar Kenneth Feinberg.

Tears flowed from my eyes as they carried Rudy off the field.

Virtually cheering for the Press Corp who stood up to the White House and refused to attend the briefing if FOX was not invited.

Missy - I'm surprised to hear that from a Maize & Blue fan! Ha! Just kidding! :)

That is a favorite movie in my household as well. Very inspirational!

Excellent analogy, Missy.  I am sure the Notre Dame fans are touched that your blog is blue and gold in honor of the Fighting Irish of  Notre Dame.  :]

Hi Missy - A side note, Rudy lives in Las Vegas. It was great to see the rest of the pool stand up for FOX. That really shows just how silly the White House's position is.

Missy, I hadn't seen that about the Press Pool but the George Will wrote a commentary in the paper the other day about how the current White House was acting like the Nixon White House making a "list of their enemies". How is business to get done if they act like that!??

Missy...

One of my all time favorite movies ... Rudy's only dream was to say that he PLAYED for Notre Dame. Not catch the winning pass, not win a championship, he just wanted to be listed as a member of the team!

It makes me tear up just thinking about it.

Great story about the press corps and tying it to the GREAT movie. Wow, I'm impressed!

Ahhhh. Now I see how you connected those 2 events. I love Rudy and have been trying to watch it again - like 4-5 years later. I've never come around to do that.

Missy - "Rudy" is one of my all-time favorite sports movies.  I had heard a couple of references to the Fox News thing yesterday, but I didn't know exactly what they were referring to until now.  Thanks!

Missy, I haven't seen Rudy but I will rent it.  As for the other press, I'm THRILLED they refused to attend without Fox.  We're supposed to have Free Speach here, I wonder if we're losing that as well........

Hi Missy, I didn't know that. I did see the movie though ( about a half dozen times) . Rudy had heart and determination. I am not so sure though that the heart part of that staement would apply to the correction about who is invited from the press pool.

Missy - Thank you for that!  Rudy is one of my favorite movies too.  Filled with so many scenes that provide nuggets of motivation and/or inspiration.  And, as others have said, what an excellent parallel to current events.  Bravo for the other networks!

Hi, Missy.  I watched Rudy long time ago, and it was an inspiring story.

Score one for the press pool--perhaps they realize that it will be too obvious they're in the pocket of this administration if they didn't object.  I hope their guiding principle continues.

I'm sure the white house was in shock that the flock of followers finally found enough spine to say no. If they would do it more often, we might get our country back.

Hi Missy...Good analogy.  It says alot about the civility and dedication to free speech on the part of ABC, CBS, NBC, and CNN.

Yes Missy Rudy is for sure a tear jerker and shows how people need to stand together for what they believe in whether it's standing up to a coach or the President of the United States.

Rudy was different than his team mates but they had a common goal - the team. It brought tears to my eyes to see that even though the news stations are very different they too have a common goal - the people and what this country was founded on.

Missy,  The rest of the news pool did the right thing. Some members of our society have forgotten or never learned how to stand up for a principle.  The first amendment was by far the most important to our founding fathers.  They made it #1.  We should never forget that or sit silently by when we see speech being stifled as we did with Humana and this administration.
