This weekend is going to be unusually busy so this may be a good time to tie the ribbon on your little finger.
First, Saturday night all the little gremlins and ghouls will be ringing the doorbells. How did this Halloween tradition get started?
Halloween was originally called All Hallow's Even- e'en ( being shortened from Even). The annual tradition is held on October 31st. The history is from the Celtic festival of Smanhain and the Christian holy day of All Saints. Although Halloween is basically a secular celebration, some have expressed feelings about perceived religious overtones. Halloween came from the Old Irish meaning "summer's end" celebrating the end of the "lighter half" of the year and the beginning of the "darker half" which is the Celtic New Year. Since Halloween is on the eve of All Saints Day which is November 1st.
Secondly, knowing this , it is appropriate that we would end Daylight Savings Time at 2 am on Sunday November 1st. At this time, we will all turn our clocks back an hour and gain an hour of sleep that night. I don't know why, but I always feel so much better in the fall when we " fall back" than in the spring, when we "spring forward".
Don't forget to change the clocks before you go to bed on Saturday night !! This is also a good time to check the batteries in your smoke alarm/detector.
You may find that you have missed church services or arrive late for an NFL game.
