Mass Flu Clinics

Hi there, just thought I would share my experience with everyone on the mass flu shot clinic I attended last friday. It was in an activity center and the cop told me and my family when we got there that it would be an hour wait outside and then another hour once we made it into the building. Well I didn't watch the weather and so I didn't wear a coat or gloves but wished I had. My 3 1/2 year old son, my daughter and my mother were also with me. Let's just say it took 4 hours instead of two hours. I thought this would be a good idea considering that when I tried to call multiple clinics that no one had the shots available. I was leaving out on a plane or am tomorrow so I wanted to get this shot before I left and several people around me already had the flu so I wanted to make sure I didn't get it nor did my little one.

I know these people volunteer and I appreciate that alot and am very thankful that they had one for us to attend but that was the most unorganized thing ever. Once you got inside there were sitting areas that you went to and then you got in long lines about 6 across and waited to fill out paperwork only to get in another long line to get the shot. There were only 3 of the lines moving out of the 6 paperwork lines. After helping two people most of them would just get up and leave and that doesn't count the several people that just went up to the front, cut right in front of everyone and got helped without having to stand in line and yes they would help these people. So us with little ones had to fight the kids with screaming, running around tired and hungry and yes having to go to the bathroom and get out of line to do so, fun stuff. I thought maybe it was just me but when I got home I watched the news and several mass flu shot clinics were having the same issues, people were in line for 4 and 5 hours and said it was the worst 5 hours they ever spent.

I am glad that we finally did get the shots and yes I had to conduct business several times on my phone in line with a screaming kid so that was fun but I am not sure that I will ever do that again. I know I am willing to pay alittle more for one if it means not going through that again. I guess my point is I am glad they had it available but at the same time wish there were an easier way to conduct a mass flu shot day. I did hear that the car lines where people were just given the shot and never had to leave there car wasn't much better because it created traffic problems. It was more stress than I had planned for that day but now it's over and I have the shot and my son had two shots that day because he was eligible for the H1N1 and after all that trouble. I had someone comment and tell me that the H1N1 was just the government trying to experiment on us. Wow that is not something a mother wants to hear after just getting her child one of those.

Well a story full of drama for sure!!!

Was it worth it? YES ! Will I do it again? Probably Not!

Deana, Maybe they will get better if they do more of these. Practice makes perfect, or at least better. This is one of the concerns I have about the government running more of the medical healthcare for the nation. There are few things that a big bureacracy does well, government or private. Glad you got the shots though.
