Franklin High School Reports Excessive Absences--Is It Swine?

Franklin High School, in Franklin, MA contacted all high school families via their broadcast telephone and email system at the start of this weekend to alert parents to the higher than usual number of school absences.

Superintendent, Maureen Sabolinski and Principal, Peter Light reported that "due to reporting issues they have been unable to determine the exact number of influenza cases... and as of today, no patterns havegerms been found among positive influenza cases." They went on to inform the public that the availability of flu vaccines is behind schedule and are awaiting word on when those vaccines will be available.

Once these vaccines become available, the Franklin Public Schools will offer a vaccination program run by the Department of Public Health and the Franklin Board of Health.  These clinics will be held in the Field House during the after-school/evening hours with parents being needed to consent/accompany their children.

My own tenth grade son mentions noticing a large number of classmates out of school but it seems they have reported more stomach/intestinal-type illness without a fever rather than the expected flu-type symptoms.

Kathy, North Attleboro had over 20% of their high school absent last week.  Reports are, though, parents are keeping healthy children home, too, because of FEAR.    It is a SCARY flu.  Praying it all goes away SOON!

One of the local schools in San Diego is participating in a pilot program with the CDC to track symptoms to see if there is epidemics. When a parent calls to report their child absent they will be asked a variety of questions on their child's symptoms. They will then analyze the reporting after a given time period and then the school/community will be notified of what the results are. H1N1 or regular flu. Pretty interesting stuff.

Lori--I guess the schools have to always take preventative measures.  Thanks.

Ruth--I heard about feline flu which seems surprising since I never thought our pets catch our colds and such...

Terry--Too bad about the faking illness.  Don't they know they will have twice the amount of work to make up?

Ann--Your town is only 15 minutes away so it sounds like the similar number absences to Franklin.  Winter is only just beginning!

Stephanie--Thanks for sharing how San Diego is handling it.  I think they will all be asked to be accountable for absences and reasons...
