Attackers Beware, this Real Estate Professional is Armed with Awareness in Safety!

How many times have you pulled into a parking spot, blabbing away on your Blackberry, just getting out of your car, lock it, without thinking about your safety being at risk?   I know that I am guilty!  Did you know the main reason a criminal attacks Person A over Person B is because Person A is not paying attention to his/her surroundings?

On Friday of last week, I had the privilege of going to a Safety Seminar/ hosted by the Martin County Board of Realtors.  The Guest Speaker was Andrew Wooten, Safety & Security Consultant who does seminars for Realtor Safety, Identity Theft, to name a few.  I had the privilege of listening to him briefly at a WCR District Forum in July.

In this class, Andrew mentioned that he has interviewed so many criminals, and the number one reason that they choose one person over another to attack, is that the victim wasn't paying attention to their surroundings. Criminals rely on the element of surprise.  Andrew showed us how someone could get out of their car, immediately get physically picked up, and carried away into a van parked next to the victim's vehicle, never to be seen again.  It's that easy, folks!  To all my Real Estate Professionals… and everyone else out there, PAY ATTENTION......it can save your life!

You're so right.  We take for granted our safety and I really should pay more attention during the day...not just at night!  Note to self, put down the cell phone while driving and when you get in and out of your car!

We as agents put ourselves in danger all the time and it's always good to be aware of your surroundings. Thanks for sharing.

Aja, you are right.  He did say that most crimes like this occur after lunch, when people are less alert.

Ruth,

Our teens are so busy, with so much going on, cell phones etc. that it is a great way to prevent something from happening, I know this class kick started me to stop absorbing myself with the ipod, the blackberry.

Hi Dan & Amy,

There were a few incidents recently in South Florida.  Andrew said that if the call to meet with someone doesn't seem right, don't go, listen to your gut!  Also, bring someone else along if you can.  There is safety in numbers, he also said to invite the local police and fire fighter to your open houses, for some special food you have just for them, this way they stop buy, hey and they could be a potential client or know someone that might want to buy a home.  He also said to make sure that when you go out on a call, let someone know where you are at all times, so you are accounting for your time, and possibly let the strangers you are with get the impression that someone knows who and where you are at all times.
