Florida Blood Center:  Donated Blood is used within 36 Hours

As some of you know last week I was giving my "
Hero Story" to the Florida Blood Center.  Originally they were going to come to my house for the interview and taping, but since I was due to donate blood we decided to meet at the local blood center in Royal Palm Beach FL.

I arrived a few minutes early for my appointment, but I didn't have to wait long for Nancy and her crew to arrive from Orlando.  Nancy is a reporter with the Florida Blood Centers who has been creating "Hero Stories"for the past four months.  These stories are about donors who give blood and patients who receive blood. ( Donor Stories & Patient Stories).

As I filled out all of my paperwork Nancy and I started talking about donating blood and the incredible stories she has heard.  During this conversation I learned that donated blood is used within 36 hours.  Yes, you read that correctly donated blood is used within 36 hours.  I was completely unaware of the blood shortage and I myself will make more of an effort to donate every 56 days, not 57th or 58th.

Save a Life today by donating an hour of your time and blood.

Nice public interest piece Michelle.  I give blood but not on a regular basis and always thought it was strange when they started to call me to come in and donate.

No kidding--every 56 days our local blood bank calls me to come in.  I typically, as I drive around, see one of the motor homes and stop in.  Since it's all networked it works out nicely, does not take very long, and is very personally rewarding.

Now, explaining to my young kids that it's important.  ---that's another story.  They do not see anything but the needle.  But at 10 and 5 I have a few years to move them along!

Thanks for the piece---

Larry - Thank you and it's awesome that you donate blood

Christa - Donating blood does not take long at all.  My kids have never seen me donate, but I'm sure the needle would scare them, hopefully I can move them along too!

I was brought up with a really strong sensew of how important it is to give blood... and fortunately Florida Blood Services is more lenient about who they'll take blood from than the Red Cross. I have naturally very low blood pressure, and the Red Cross up north would never let me give. In Florida, I jump up and down next to my car for about a minute before I go in to give blood, and that brings it high enough to pass :)

BTW, did you know that only 7% of people have O-, the universal donor blood type? If you have O negative, your blood can be used for anyone and is the first blood in emergencies when there is no time to test for blood type...

Shoshana - I can't honestly say why I started donating blood, I've always felt it was the right thing to do, an easy way to give back, pay it forward, etc.

I did not know that only 7% have O- and that it's universal.  I have AB+, which I've read only 3.4% of the US popluation has this type of blood.

Wow, Michelle!  AB+ is also really coveted!  I have A+, which is OK... and I also can be a pharesis donor when my hemoglobin is high enough since I've got good veins in both arms. It takes more time, but in the end they can help more people with the concentrate (or that's the way I understand it). I do hope your Heroes story helps more people donate blood!
