The Diabetes Epidemic Among Children

I just returned from the American Diabetes Association's annual convention. I am the president of the Diabetes Association in Santa Clarita and it was my pleasure to attend the convention.

Diabetes has become an epidemic throughout the world and children are suffering the most from this. Many times a child will become ill and is taken to the emergency room with symptoms that resemble the flu. These hospitals and clinics do not regularly check for diabetes and instead treat the child as though he has the flu. This leads to a worsening of the condition and prolonged wait time until the diabetes is correctly diagnosed.

Each person in this country consumes 66 pounds of high fructose corn syrup annually. High fructose corn syrup is derived from corn but is an artificial product developed and popularized during the 1980's in the United States. It changes our metabolism and is blamed on some types of obesity, heart disease, cancer, and diabetes.

This disease is unnecessary because it can be controlled with diet and exercise.

  • Exercise daily ~ swimming, brisk walking, or other aerobic exercise is best
  • Avoid refined sugar or ANYTHING containg high fructose corm syrup
  • See a doctor at least once a year and get tested for diabetes and other contollable diseases

If you need health insurance call me for complete details and information. I care about you and your family being protected from illness, injury, or disease.

Great info.  I'm a competitive youth soccer coach and you wouldn't believe the shape some of the players who come try out are in.  We all need to spread the word about eating right and exercising regularly.  The best way to do that is to lead by example.

I recommend renting a movie called Super Size Me.  It was absolultely startling to learn the statistics about fast food, obesity and diabetes.

I have a 13 year old son who was diagnosed with type ! diabetes about 18 months ago.  The recommendations you are giving are for preventing type 2 diabetes.  The misconceptions about type 1 diabetes are that the condition is preventable, related to sugar intake, or genetic in nature. Type 1 diabetes is an auto-immune disease that is becoming increasingly common in both children and adults.  It is insulin dependent, wheras type 2 diabetes is an insulin resistant disease.
