Foreclosures; Why such bitterness?

I know that this may ruffle a few feathers, but I feel inclined to ask this question....Why do owners, or shall I say previous owners of foreclosed properties feel the need to vandalize and/or do as much damage to a property as possible?  I know that this is obviously a tough time for people, but is it REALLY the bank's fault they didn't or couldn't make their payments?

I understand that especially a few year ago during the "bubble", a lot of buyers were "talked" into Adjustable Rate Morgages and different types of questionable loans.  Some were pre-approved for homes they truly couldn't afford, but did anyone FORCE them to buy the property and sign the contracts?

It's quite disgusting to see what I do when walking through foreclosures.  Human/animal waste, rotten food, broken windows & doors, trash piled a few feet high (or more), curse words and slander written on the walls, cabinets & wiring removed, wholes in drywall, even landscaping removed.  This isn't even including the damage that is done to the plumbing and pipes which costs tens of thousands of dollars to repair and replace.

It makes me question what is happening to the expectation in our society of self responsibility, integrity, honesty, work ethic, selfishness, and consideration of others.  I'm not saying that we all don't have hard times, and times of absolute upset and distress where we did nothing to bring it on.  But it's how we handle ourselves in problematic situations that shows our true character.  Maybe people just forget that what we put out comes back to us, not just once but over and over again. This is a disappointing reality that I'm starting to see more of.

I just pray (and hopefully you do too) that I raise my children to have integrity, self responsibility, and honor when they grow...  If that is a lesson I can teach based on what I see, then it's not a lesson lost..

I agree completely, Jessica. It is really sad to see the state in which some of these homes are left. Now, we're not talking about people who had to hurriedly vacate the premises and just did not have time to thoroughly clean it.  We're talking about homes that were actually vandalized prior to the residents vacating the premises, right?  In many cases, I can only surmise that the owners are hurt and angry about the situation they've found themselves in and they are taking it out on whomever they can - which they really aren't doing.

It's sad but hopefully our children will learn to respect their property - even when they are forced to give it away.
