If The Snow Won't Come To You - Go To The Snow

The New Year has arrived and Christmas 2009 has become a not quite faded  memory.  With no snow in sight for Christmas here in Oakville,  our family decided to head north to Parry Sound, Ontario to find some white stuff.

We weren't disappointed as there was lots of snow to be found.  On Christmas day though, the rain came.  The temperature rose above the freezing mark and the snow disappeared from the surface of Otter Lake, exposing the smooth ice.

As you can see by the photo below Santa did find us, and an enjoyable Christmas holiday was enjoyed by all.

Hey Jenny!  Great photos!  As my daughter once said when she was too little to understand the concept of a changing year - Happy New You!

Great shots, Jenny.  I'm glad you found some white stuff.  I took the 75 mile drive south to Spokane, WA today for some indoor tennis and there was NO snow at all!  I couldn't believe it.  We have over 100" here at Schweitzer Mountain...I had no idea.

Jenny - I haven't been through Parry Sound in at least the past couple of years so it's nice to see it again.  Well, a bit of snow come to my end of Toronto yesterday so I don't need to go up north to see it.  Unfortunately, it also brought a lot of coooolllllld.    Bbbbbbrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

Hi Jenny... is it just me or does Santa look like he got run over by his sleigh and flattened?  I think Blitzen was the ring leader in the reindeer conspiracy!

Jenny, that's a perfect ice skating rink!  The surface looks like a mirror! I would think the ice gets thick enough there.  Enjoy and have a wonderful New Year!

Hi Diane - Ah, you aren't complaining about the snow are you????? :)

Hi Haris - I can't wait to see your works of art from the new camera.  What did you end up getting?

Hi Debi - At least I was able to come home and leave it behind up north but we did end up getting a couple inches yesterday.  No storms yet like last year.

Hi Silvia- our kids used to have great hockey games there in past years.  Some years there was lots of snow on top and they had to shovel a rink but these are ideal conditions.

Very funny Steve - Poor old Santa.  My inlaws have had him kicking around for at least  the 33 years that I have known them.  But we can blame Blitzen if you want.

Hi William - I hate dirty snow too, lol.  That darn old song is quite catchy isn't it?  And Steve?  Well Steve must have been having one of his Silly Steve moments. :)

Hi Marc - I must say I don't like this cold spell.  Even with my long johns on, I'm finding it a little nippy.

Hi Kent - You drove 75 miles to play tennis????  You just needed a little change from skiing?  Sounds like you have a good base on the mountain.

Hi Rick - Happy New You to you also lol.  I hope you enjoyed the holidays.  Nice to see you back.

Hi Lisa - You know I"m smiling at your comment right?  Actually I do feel bad for the fruit trees.  I sure hope the frost doesn't get them.

Hi Chris - Happy New Year to you also.  We also enjoy Otter Lake in the summer.

Aw come on Steve - Can't you picture yourself slippin' and slidin' on that ice???  Sounds like fun doesn't it??

Hi John, Windermere is still there.  They renovated recently I think.  I don't get up to cottage country much during the winter months as I don't like driving in bad weather.  It is nice being there though when it snows and blows and you know you don't have to go anywhere and just enjoy it.

Jenny,

I see that you and your family missed the snow so much to actually go on an expedition to try and find it.  Most people (especially those in warmer climates) would find that hard to believe but the Canadian in me understands it perfectly.  It looks like Santa in photo #1 was also worried and was measuring the snow (not even one horizontal bar on a scale of 5) to try to shed some light.  :)  Nice photos of Parry Sound!

Al & Peg - I'm sure there is a lot more snow in Orillia since last time you were up.  Quite a change from Marco Island.

Hi Mary - The kids used to have so much fun on the lake when they were little.  Sometimes we would build a bonfire on the ice at night and sit around enjoying the stars.

Tony and Darcy - I know, some people think I'm crazy when I say I went looking for the snow lol.

Hi Gerry - Parry Sound is a great place to visit but I don't think I could live there.  The population of 6500 is a little too tame for me lol.

Hi Debra - Yes, we've had the high winds too.  It's a little spooky when I'm walking in the forest with the dog and the trees start creaking.

I have to laugh at what you said about the trees creaking.  I was showing a house last Sunday and it was extremely cold-very blustery and it was snowing.  When we got out of the car at the house and headed up the sidewalk the trees across the street were "creaking." (the wind was extremely cold and strong) The woman was so freaked by the sound (it was extremely weird I have to admit) she almost didn't want to go into the house.  It was loud and as we got closer to the house it got louder and louder as we got further away from it.  Figure that out!  LOL
