ADVERTISING in the NEWSPAPER vs. INTERNET

By
Real Estate Agent with Metro Brokers/GMAC Real Estate
Hello....  I would like to know from realtor's and the public's point-of-view regarding where do people search for listings and open house events in today's society?  In the newspaper vs. the internet.  To the realtors, what are your pros or cons in both the newspaper and the internet advertising?  To the public, which is more convenience and what web sites or newspapers do you feel gives the public better and more accurate information regarding the advertising for listings and open houses?  Thank you for your input.

Depends upon the audience you are targeting, although more and more people are becoming more internet savvy.  So many advantages to online advertising, I can't imagine why anyone would use the paper to advertise a property..on a website such as realtor.com, etc., you can really SHOW your property with photos, virtual tours, etc.  Plus, you can reach a global audience, some of who may search online for properties in cities where they are looking to relocate.

My two coents...

Thanks,

I personally haven't purchased a paper in....well I can't even remember how long its been. But I am also a person who spends a significant time on the computer and am more likely to research on the computer. If I was specifically looking to attend some open houses though... I would probably buy a paper, because I don't know of one good place to go find open house info for properties listed by different brokers etc. I think newspaper vs online is really just going to depend on an individual. Sometimes its still nice to actually hold paper and read it.

29% of all transactions started with a buyer finding a listing online last year. Newspapers were significantly lower than that. I say put your money where the buyers are

We only ever use www.OpenHouseGenie.com for all our open house advertising. It's a very clean, professional, easy to use site. We pay $10 for an ad that runs seven days.  You can add photos, virtual tour, link to your personal website and all your contact information is very easy for the open house visitor. I have had a lot open house visitors come to me from this site.  I know it's in San Diego and I talked to the owner who says they're expanding nationally and looking for five other cities.  We used to use the Union Tribune but one small open house ad starts at $132! Insane.  The death of papers is here, which is too bad because I read my religiously with coffee every morning.

By the way, we always do open houses and always find a lead because we treat them like a real event.  It's exhausting but it's amazing the business we get from them.
