Do bring the outdoors in.

One design idea is bringing fresh flowers, sticks and grass are all things that will help brighten a room. Gives the designer touch.

Don't buy furniture in a set.

Mismatch furniture, it adds character to a room. Shop around. Find a chair with a different fabric to add to your family room. This is a great way stagers create a mood for the room.

Do use the rule of three.

A theory used in both design and staging. When designing a room with accessories always put them in odd numbers. For example - put out the candles, instead of two.

Don't get sucked into trendy furniture.

Designers are guilty of this too, it is hard to resist unless you want to replace your furniture every couple years. But this is an expensive mistake that people make. They buy furniture that is very bold, a trend that is in. Instead of buying that red / lime green / baby blue couch, accessories. Buy a couch that is neutral and red pillows, lime pillows, etc. Or paint an accent wall with a trendy colour, it is easier and cheaper to paint than replacing furniture. Gives a great designers touch.
