One Take

I want you to watch this video.  The band is the same one that brought us that beautifully choreographed music video using 6 running treadmills.  It’s funny and entertaining but that’s not why it’s here.

When you watch you might notice that’s it’s one take. It’s called a “Long Shot“.  No cuts, no edits. Turn the camera on and Go!

I also LOVE the creative use of camera angles!

OK Go - This Too Shall Pass from OK Go on Vimeo.

The reason I bring this up is this.  Often times we’re presented with opportunities where we get one shot to make our point.  No cuts, no edits, no retakes.  Some people will over think and over practice for the occasion.  Others, like those in this video will strive to do their best but should they stumble, mumble or fall – it’s ok.  Practice is good, it essential, but sometimes over-practicing can stifle great creative work.   With a keen I eye you can see many “mistakes” in this video.  Late or early timings, out of position, missed marks.  You might see that now that I pointed them out but did it ruin the video?  Not at all.  I say “dust off and keep going! ”

MORAL OF THE STORY

Keep this in mind when you are creating your first video, your first blog post, or even your first tweet.  Strive to get it right but don’t sweat it.  Get your point across and move on to the next.

As a BONUS here’s a Long Shot from “The Goodfellas”.  Imagine the entire cast hitting their marks on time for Martin Scorsese!

Enjoyed the video - like you said, we often over practice - or don't take the first step for fear of getting it wrong - then nothing gets done.  I often over think my blog posts - and find the thought of editing a video worrisome when I start out - but better to get it out there and do my best than not have it out there.  I am always looking for ways to remind myself that things don't always have to be serious and significant and this is one of them - thanks.

Cathy - I originally wrote this post for an "certain Agent" I know who has always struggled in blogging.  It takes them an incredible amount of time to write a post in part because they have in their mind that it has to be perfect.  Pulitzer Prize Winning Perfect.  Because it takes him so long, he doesn't write posts.

I had a nice conversation yesterday on Facebook with my online friend René Fabre about this.

If nothing is produced as a result of overthinking where's the value?

My blogs are all one take!  Mental vomits I can truly call my own!

Driving into work the other day the radio was playing Iron Butterfly's "Inagodadavida" and I learned that they did that 17minute song all in one take and did not even know they were being recorded.  Also the orig name of the song was In the Garden of Eden, but one of the guys was so inebriated that no one could understand it.. and now it is famous for being the longest RR song.

a little useless one take knowledge for you to file in the brain bank!
