Why Democrats can't pass health care reform ...

There are those who support passing to create "afforable health care".  This is an impractical concept on the face of it because it's impossible to pass a law to set a price on any good.  Healthcare costs what it costs, no matter what price control the government may pass.  It's like the "cheap groceries" under the Soviet system. IT doesn't matter how cheap the bread is, if there is no bread on the shelf.

In the end, healthcare reform isn't about the price of healthcare.  It's about pays for healthcare.  Just because you make other Americans pay for your healthcare, that doesn't make healthcare cheaper.

Thre are those who claim that healthcare reform has not failed. They claim that progress has been halted by 3 or 4 "Corporate Democrats (and the GOP, we know their strategy already) who pledge allegiance and serve these companies and not the people".

This belief is based on a fundamental misunderstanding of how representative government works in a non-dictatorial state. In a free country, no matter how popular you are, you're only going to get so many people to cooperate with your proposals. You'll get the benefit of people who are in your party, but most of the time you won't get everyone in your party.

Simplify this concept by imagining 10 representatives sitting in chairs like so:

1 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 5 - 6 - 7 - 8 - 9 - 0

Now imagine that that the people who sit in the chairs numbered from 5 to zero are all Democrats and the people who sit in chairs 1 through 4 are all Republicans.

Democrats and Republicans are not like the B'ath party. Unlike the old Soviets, Democrats and Republicans actually get to make their own minds up.  Each one of those representatives has a free mind and a different interpretation of what they think is best.  If you have a very popular proposal, you'll pick up a couple of people to each side of you.

In other words if you appeal to Representative number 5 and you are a Democrat, you will get votes from Republican number 4 and almost all the Democrats. The most socialist and leftward Democrats will be angry and won't be satisfied, but the legistlation will pass.

1 - 2 - 3 - 4 - (5) - 6 - 7 - 8 - 9 - 0

But if you appeal to Democrat number 9 you have will have a very hard time of it.  That's because there is no one left of 0. You will get zero Republicans and moderate Democrats will not support your proposal because they want to get reelected. Democrats like number 6 will go along with you out of loyalty to the party, but Democrat number 5 has a very tenuous hold on his seat. Each representative has to consider his particular district and his own political future when he votes.

1 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 5  - 6 - 7 - 8 - (9) - 0 - x - x

That in a nutshell is why the President can't pass a big socialist healthcare system.  Not only does the country not want it, but the representatives in his own party won't vote for it.

Clinton was a successful President because he appealed to the middle. Many Democrats weren't satisfied with Clinton, but he understood the strength of the middle. Reagan appealed to the middle. Obama appeals to the left---that appears to be a dead end at the Presidential level.

Bayh's defect is another nail and sign that the Democrats are moving too far left and they need to stop their attemps to push through health care of they could loose the house and senate in November....hopefully!

healthcare is really about who is going to pay for it.  You are right.  the current entitlement system is broke and they are looking for a quick fix.    So they do what they always do, shove new programs at us under the guise of helping the few who can't seem to help themselves.

It seems like every time our country is on the verge of bancruptcy the Government comes up with some Social program that is "very good" for the people, but most of the money ends up being spent some place else...

Social security was invented back in 1936 when America was broke and the Government needed money fast. Now we are almost bankrupt again and they are coming up with the urgent need for a socialized health care reform...Are we that stupid?!?

Why would anyone believe this time around would be different? Just look at the Govt's report card: The U.S. Postal Service, Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security... Can anyone name one "Government Service" that hasn't failed?

No wonder they can"t pass it - smart people on both sides know that PRIVATE health care equals QUALITY health care - simple as that!

Tough one there Will.  I think most Americans believe in hard work and low taxes.  Stop rewarding the users at the expense of the producers.

Will, the problem with the current health care industry reform bills on the table is that they are too big.  With something that big you are always going to have dissenters from any party.  However Republicans from the outset were against ANY kind of health care industry reform.  Trimming these bills down or starting over isn't going to work.  I am convinced that a good number of Republicans don't want any reform at all.

I look at some of the comments here, and have to wonder.

#1 - Bayh quit because he was disgusted with Washington.  He took that office because he wanted to do some good for his country.  He felt that in the current environment he could not do that.  You can't blame this on any one party, or say it is the fault of the "left".  The extreme "right" is as much to blame for the situation in Washington.

#2 - Dale is pretty close to having it right.  It does smack of throwing more money at a problem and that is the single-most problem with this Health Care Industry proposal(s) on the table:  WHO is going to pay for it?  That has not been answered, and don't believe it when they say it will be paid back by savings.

#3 - Please don't say the Postal System and other government run programs failed.  The Postal System is working very well and many of the other programs are doing what they were intended to do.  They may not be efficient but most would not want to go without them.  There is a way to make these systems more efficient but it seems our legislators never want to deal with it.  Just keep paying for the waste and let someone else worry about it.  I think it IS time we do something about making our government run more efficiently.

$4 - I don't believe there are a lot of ""users" out there.  Those that only want to take and not contribute are dead ends, and their lives will end that way.  I am not concerned about them.  I am concerned about how much big money drives and runs our government just so corporations can make more big money.  It seems that is all Washington legislators care about.  I don't blame Bayh for quitting.  We have lost our government to big business long ago.  And contrary to the belief of many, lower taxes for big business is NOT going to contribute to more jobs.  Our small businesses are the ones doing the REAL hiring and creating jobs.  I want to see health care industry legislation, but I don't want the burden of paying for any increased costs placed on our small business people especially those who hire contractors and are squeaking by as is.  If this legislation would end up shutting down those businesses then it deserves to die.
