Today is National Arbor Day, a day to honor trees. The history of Arbor Day is a history of celebration of the importance of trees to human life. According to the Arbor Day Foundation, J. Sterling Morton in 1872 first proposed the adoption of Arbor Day. Morton, a newspaper editor in Nebraska, used his writing skills to promote the value of planting trees to the newspaper's readers. In addition to providing fuel and building materials, he pointed out more importantly trees were needed for windbreaks to keep soil in place and provide shade in the hot sun. He encouraged civic organizations and groups to join in the planting of trees which grew into a national movement to help land conversation.
We all know in Atlanta how important trees are. They create a beatiful green canopy over our city. It's one of our best features. So today be a tree hugger and appreciate their beauty.
Joyce Kilmer, poet, said it best in the poem Trees...
