Long form blogging is maturing. That is something I didn't think I would hear as I consider it a young technology but it is true. A study I read recently says that young people are blogging less.
A recent study by the Pew Internet & American Life Project , found that 14% of Internet youths aged 12 to 17 blog now as compared to 24% in 2006. There is a similiar drop in comments which also means they are not following on their peers blogs either.
Pew estimats that roughly one in 10 online adults maintain a blog now and that number is about the same as in 2005. So if you do the math and find that the percentage of blogs has remained the same while the number of young bloggers has decreased dramtically it means that more of you older folks have taken up blogging.
So what are the younger internet users doing for information and updates? How about increasing access to social networking sites by a huge margin. It went from 55% in 2005 to over 75% this year. Places like FaceBook are loving that kind of growth. Social networking sites allows you to do a quick update and to follow more people that only do quick updates.
Blogging as you know takes time, effort and thought. It is an involved form of self expression. It seems that younger people no longer have an interest in sharing their every thought with the whole world. I guess I am on to FaceBook.
