Funny, when I tell people I am from East Texas they they do not realize that East Texas is full of gorgeous trees, rolling hills and southern hospitality.

Mineola, Texas is one of those towns the offer something for everyone, but be careful the laid back lifestyle can be additive. You will go through three stops lights as you go through town, but each light offers you something that you don't see anywhere from Dallas to Shreveport.  Our town is full of antique shops, wonderful restaurants that are very unique, the oldest theatre in Texas, which is still going strong with community theatre plays on occassion, but offers a weekend movie that is for the most part is family oriented so the entire family can go out on a night in Mineola.  We have a Dairy Queen that is probably the cleanest one in Texas.  The owners Debbie and Ted told me one time that they want travelers to come in a wash up or grab a bit to eat.  They want them to come back.  Then there is the Sonic drive-in.  The owners have all their kids working there and their oldest is just the nicest person to talk to.  He will make sure your order is to perfection.  But, if you visit Mineola you MUST have a hamburger at East Texas Burger Company.  This 1901 establishment has passed owers a few times, but the atmosphere has never changed.  Good service is given by the local high schools kids working there to save money and they are great kids and will even chat with you while you wait for the fantastic hamburger.  This is where you will find my family on Friday night before a football game.  The best hamburger you have ever eaten.  Then there is Kitchen's - now this is a treat.  It is a hardware store and hot lunch spot.  Best sandwiches around and you can even get a scoop of Blue Bell Ice Cream for dessert.  yummy!

One other thing you need to see while visiting Mineola is our train depot.  Just went through a major renovation and I must say I am totally impressed.  So, if you are planning a trip on Am Track make sure you stop off in Mineola and tour the Little Red Caboose and have your picture taken or have a glass of ice tea at the Gazebo, which sits in the center of town.  And, if you have time and you enjoy collectible cars, then you will want to visit Suzie Q's.  A 50's type resturant that has car shows on ocassion.

So, if you want to do some fishing then you will have to take a trip to Lake Fork.  Lake Fork is the Bass Capital and very well known for their large outh bass fishing.  Of course, there are plenty of lakes around Mineola, so there is something for everyone to enjoy a nice weekend.

We dont have hotels or motels, but we have some of the finest Bed and Breakfasts you have ever been to.  My favorite is Munzesheimer Manor, owners are Sherry and Bob.  They will treat you as family and sit on the wrap around front porch of their 1898 home.  But, you have to have breakfast served by Bob!  It will totally take your breath away!  He is such a great cook and wonderful host.  Most of the other B&Bs are historical homes as well, but I have known Sherry and Bob for years and we always put family and friends there to enjoy the experience.

Oh, and if you can visit the Beckam Hotel - Historical landmark and it is HAUNTED!  What a treat!  And, we do have some famous people that are from Mineola.  Former Mayor Willie Brown of San Francisco and Noble Willingham of Texas Ranger.  You can also visit Miranda Lamberth's store in Lindale, just down the road.  She won 1st place on Nashville Star.  And, if you are a baseball nut, watch for Mineola High School graduate Adam Moore who just signed with the Seattle Mariners.

This home above is a great place to take a photo of your kids in their Easter outfit.  I have one for every year that we have lived here.

So, if you are ever in the mood for a weekend get-a-way, then I highly recommend visiting our quaint town for some great antique shopping, good food and peaceful nights sleep.  And if you plan your trip just right you can stay over on the first weekend of each month and spend the day at Canton, Texas - home of First Monday.  The largest flea market I have ever seen.

FYI, come early and stay all weekend to enjoy everything - our town shuts down around 8:00 PM every night. :D
