GET OVER IT!!!

Breast Cancer Awareness Ribbon     WHAT CAN I DO?  I am but one person.  How does participating in anything change the outcome of the future of so many?  I cannot run, I was in a car accident, and I am now chronically sore.  I do not run.  It's so early in the morning, and on a Sunday, too!  My budget is kind of tight right now...

                                                              EXCUSES!!  EXCUSES!!  EXCUSES!!

It is time that we all get over ourselves and our wimpy excuses!  On the 23rd of September, Portland will be participating in our Race for the Cure.  I have personally been participating for three years now.  When I quit making excuses, I became a fighter.  That fighter mentality has helped me in so many arenas already.  So, I thought that I would perhaps address a few of those excuses that I hear all too often when recruiting a team of runners for an event like the Komen Race for the Cure...

  • My budget is tight right now... ~  Have you ever known a soul with any form of cancer?  Do you know how expensive (even with insurance) a treatment, a surgery, a hospital visit, anything related costs them out of pocket?  Get over it!  $25.00 to register is nothing.  Donating $10 or $15 is even less.  What about the laws of reciprocation.  When you need help, do you not want it, ask for it, and dare I say, expect it?  Again, I say, "Get over it!"  Now that we are beyond the objection of money...
  • It's so early in the morning, and on a Sunday, too! ~ Fine, if you truly need your beauty sleep, there is a "Sleep for the Cure!"  My husband does that route.  You still even get a tshirt with your registration so that you can participate in the awareness.  As for Sunday, for those of you who attend church, you can still go.  I actually attend church, and have gone post "Race".  Guess what, God calls us to help others.  What better way of honoring your faith than to put words of compassion into actions of faith.  Faith that someday cancer will no longer threaten the lives of our friends and family.  It will stop taking mom's, grandpa's, cousins, and friends away from us.  So, sleep, donate, participate, just do something and get over it!
  • I do not run. ~ Fine!  WALK!  Get over it!  Participate in life.  Participate in healing!  Or donate to someone, or even just to cancer research.  I truly believe that once we can find a way to attack one specific type of cancer, then it will not be long before the other forms are hunted down, be treated, and loose their chokehold on lives, too.
  • I was in a car accident...blah blah blah ~  So was I.  I broke the 2nd vertebrae in my neck.  Still chronically sore.  GET OVER IT!  It is nothing compared to the day in day out struggle just to survive!  I have a friend who at thirtysomething (protection of the innocent) was diagnosed with breast cancer over three years ago.  She is still fighting it as hard as she possibly can.  She has two smallish kidlets at home, and is doing her best to not give up.  Every movement is a struggle.  Eating is a challenge.  Talking...Smiling...Hugging her children...hospital beds for days on end with 100% isolation as her white blood cell count is .07 (it should be 10).  Get over it!  You can move, you may be tired or sore the next day, but at least you can do it!

*  Now, there are those of you who you know that it is not a matter of an excuse, a doctor would tell you not to even think of it.  If that is you, I am not attempting to convince you to get out there and kill yourself.  As with all exercise, you must consult with your doctor.  However, you are still able to contribute in some fashion.  They need volunteers, so volunteer your time to help!  They still need donations, so donate.  Play your part.  Do not give up on life.... We all need you for your own individual strength and courage.  Your involvement will help to inspire those who need your kind of inspiration!

I guess what I hope to get across to everyone is that we all have so much to offer.  Let's get out there and do it.  I have a team in the Race.  I am involved.  I do think it would be awesome to have a team full of Realtors, mortgage brokers, appraisers, and everyone in our business!  So, if you want more information on any of it...running, walking, sleeping, donating, volunteering, please let me know.  Let's get over ourselves, and reach out to those who truly need our help!  I will be watching, reading, writing, and now training again...

Sarah,  Well said and presented.  From time to time all of us need a kick in the backside for one reason or another.  Yours is a great cause and I hope it is extremely successful.

Let's not forget the end goal. Helping people is the big picture.  If you have a group of people that want to help then go for it.  Don't let anything hold you back.  Good Luck!

Dotti ~ Thank you for your support and encouragement!

Bill ~  It is a great cause and so far the success factor has been high.  This is my best year yet... Thanks for the comment!

Jeff ~ Thank you for your comment.  The more that agree, the merrier!  :-)

Eric ~  I was writing with the intention of the Race for the Cure.  At the same time, one cannot help but notice that everything we do can be paralleled to the "Get over it!" mentality.  Thanks for reading.

Enjoy your day and tackle all of your challenges with zero excuses...

Sarah-i love this post because it's right in the face and to the point.  There are so many rewards given because of our action in being givers.  Giving back to our communities should be a focus with unselfishness from all of us.  Excuses go on forever and a day, but we will make a difference.

Sarah, even though you are just one person, it still makes a difference. What's truly amazing is when you get millions of people involved in a project who are all thinking to themselves "I'm just one person."  Little do they know ...

Keep up the good work.
