Blog comment spam

By
Real Estate Technology with ActiveRain

This issue has been brought up by several members who have been tired of other members leaving short, non informative comments on their blog posts in what appears to be an attempt to gain points.  The has a detramental effect of cluttering up the blog postings and also causes the poster to receive unwanted comment notifications if they have email notification turned on.  This is the definition of spam...

As we've said before points are meant as a way to reward members for taking actions that help grow the community.  With that in mind we identified two members who were the cause of almost all (90%) of this comment spam.  They have recieved a significant point penalty and have also been sent warnings to clean up their act or face removal from the system.

Ahh, the comments!!  That makes sense... yes, I was looking at someone's point summary the other day and they comment on about 50 posts a day... so not fair!  It all makes sense now...

"I think point penatlies are crap. The agents that have been here for a while have so many points because they abused the system. 30,000 points? give me a break. Look at their point history."

Jamie, please review my point history and tell me where I've abused the system???? I have far less blog posts than many. Like everyone else at the top, the vast majority of my points came from referring members--helping the network grow. That's pretty much the point in a social network...

Tim & Susan just blew by me, and Linda will drop me to #4 probably in a couple of days. So what? Do I want to be #1, heck yeah. Why? Because as anyone that knows me will tell you I am competitive to a fault. But being #1 will only help my ego, not my business. Referring others and helping the network grow WILL help my business.

I could make three 200 point blog posts a day to try and catch Paul, Tim & Susan and soon Linda. But that won't help Active Rain grow. And it's the growth of Active Rain that will ultimately be to ALL our advantage.

So relax, take a virtual valium and let's all work together on growing this network...

"JoinTheRain.com, wonder if anyone thought about having a catchy domain name which forwards to their referral link?"

Pure dead brilliant Paul. Ideas like that, "out of the box" so to speak, are what will help make AR continue to grow at the rate it is. Wish I'd thought of it, but am more glad that someone, anyone did. Every single agent that joins here helps EVERYONE.

JoinTheRain.com....  Makes my CraigsList idea look amature in comparison... May  be time to head to GoDaddy and shamlessly steal...

Ha! There I was enjoying a cold one and watching a movie and what did I hear but Jay running up on my heals?!  Just had to pass that 30,000 mark tonight before turning in, Jay. Pass me one of those virtual valiums (gotta love that one!) and have a wonderful, productive week out there.

G'Night friends.

First I want to apologize to anyone who felt spammed.  It was not my intention.

Second I want to comment that to be penalized without any warning is a bit much.

Third I don't think people should be penalized for being prolific.  Go ahead and read any of my comments from the weekend.  They all have some pertinent information to offer.  Most were longer than some of the blogs.

Finally I want to thank those of you for your positive comments and hope that these points will be reinstated  due to the fact at the very least there was no warning and I do have alot to offer this group.

Matt -- Like blogs, how about awarding points for a certain number of comments.  People are still free to comment and provide insightful opinions without any suspicion as to whether they're being a sharing member of the community vs just commenting for points.

That is certainly NOT an amateurish idea, I've been doing it for a month! Head on over to GoDaddy, it's not stealing when I gave it away.

Hi Matt,

How about points for getting comments and no points for making comments?

Actually points for receiving comments isn't a bad idea. Maybe 10 points for receiving a comment, excluding ones left by yourself naturally.

Wow, did I just really spend 15 whole minutes reading all 31 comments on this blog! Yes I did.  Okay, here is my two cents.  Imagine if they made everyone's points 0 and we all started out from scratch?  What would you do?  Will people go bonkers?

Let rain grow!  Every day I invite new people, not all join, not all are computer savvy, but I try to make the network grow!  Specially since I started, look what I have done in Connecticut.  I spread the word and Connecticut went from 4-6 members to 42!  That is just in a week and a half or so!  I LOVE RAIN! LET IT RAIN, LET IT RAIN..

BIG FRIENDLY SUGGESTION: Instead of having just two persons on the main page, basically instead of having two top members on the home activerain page, lets cut the MAP, the united states, north america, into 3 or 4 or 5 or 6 major regions and allow maybe 6 or 8 or 10 or 12 or more members to show up on the home page?  Anyone like this idea?  I would love to hear the ActiveRain's Management Staff's opinions and friendly suggestions.  I think it is a great idea?  Not trying to say that the top two on the page now do not deserve to be there, but my point is, when I am referring a realtor or business partner to the site, and then go there and see one of the two top members there, they get turned off that their region is not even highlighted or mentioned, this is feedback that I got a bunch of times from others that I tried to refer to the site, so that I can help the network grow and grow.

What do you think?

Well said....I like the idea of regions...but are we not making too much out of this?  We sell real estate let the computer guys make the rules...if one does not like it they are free to remove themselves and move on....

Jay,

I agree!  If you don't like the rules, move on!  I am here to stay.  Again, that was just a friendly suggestion to whomever that can change the home page around, not the real estate pros.

Fellow ActiveRain members I have a confession to make...

I'm guilty of ripping off blog posts and recycling them as my own. My thoughts are that there is no excuses for this behavior only that this is my first attempt at blogging.

I've deleted these posts and kept the (2) posts the are 100% original. I feel better about doing this and would be very upset to be removed from the ActiveRain community.

Not only that, but I can honest say that I will have a few good things to contribute!

It's funny how grown ups still sound like children as soon as you initiate any type of "reward" system.  I can't believe I just sat here and read through all of these comments.  That's like five whole minutes of my life that I will never get back! LOL

I love this site! I am new and just learning my way around but I have complaints.  So there! :-D

Hmmm, looks like I got here after the all of the hullabaloo.  I agree with Jaquelyn's comment above about making changes in the point system retroactive to put everything on a fairer ground.

I think that it would get rid of all of the spam comments by giving individual points to members based on the quality of the comments left. That should help clean up the house :)
