Flagler County (close to Daytona Beach) Tops List of Fastest Growing Small Counties

While many small towns grew this past decade as a result of the baby boomers relocating to sunbelt locations, Florida had 4 counties ranked in the top 10, in early U.S. Census Bureau projections:

1. Flagler County, Fla.
2. Kendall County, Ill.
3. Rockwall County, Texas
4. Pinal County, Ariz.
5. Sumter County, Fla.
6. Forest County, Pa.
7. Forsyth County, Ga.
8. St. John's County, Fla.
9. Lake County, Fla.
10. Lyon County, Nev.

While economists expect growth to slow in the next decade, as people stay closer to jobs, and because they can't sell their homes, Florida will always be a desirable place to live.

Flagler County, just north of Volusia County and 15 miles to Daytona, not far from Orlando or Jacksonville or St Augustine, is one of the fastest growing in the state.  The county is forecast by the University of Florida to have one of the highest job growth rates in the state by 2010.  Flagler Beach (read more on my web site) has a lifestyle that makes it unique and idyllic.  No fast food restaurants, no huge crowds of sunbathers, or throngs of motorist and boaters. FlaglerBeach lies on a 6-mile stretch of flat beach: a small-town Florida you might have thought didn't exist any more.  Flagler Beach is a narrow island bordered on the east by the Atlantic Ocean and on the west by the intracoastal waterway.  It is part of the growing Palm Coast area, a twenty-mile stretch of scenic coastline that is a sportsman's haven.

Palm Coast was developed by ITT Corporation in 1969; the original plan included 48,000 homesites on 42,000 acres.  An extensive water management system was designed around 46 miles of freshwater canals and 23 miles of saltwater canals.  Founded on the virtues of preservation and conservation, Palm Coast offers tree-covered pathways, abundant birdlife, verdant foliage, and the sounds and smells of the ocean.  Framed by the intracoastal waterway and laced with a web of deep water canals, Palm Coast offers limitless opportunities for boaters.  The city has an active Parks & Recreation Department, and Flagler County maintains an office for the Council on Aging in Palm Coast.
