Real Estate On the Go!

By
Real Estate Agent with Keller Williams Real Estate RS301772

It seems like I'm always driving around the area - running to Walmart, driving by Ehrhardt's and wishing for a Portabella Sandwich...traveling through Hawley...taking my kids to the babysitter near Lackawaxen...and I was often scrambling if I saw a FSBO or something else that looked interesting enough to jot down: my pen rolled off the dash and is under the driver seat, somewhere...my daughter took my little memo pad and wrote cryptic messages on every page.  I needed to do something to have everything I need at my fingertips, and not strewn all over the interior of the car.

metal clip boardA few years ago, I gave my husband Glenn a heavy duty aluminum clip board to carry all his carpentry contractor dodads - notes, receipts, business cards, calculator...you know, all that "stuff".

He loves it!  I can't believe all the stuff he crams in there.  However, for my needs, it's too big, too heavy, too clunky.

I found my perfect "on the go desktop" at Walmart for $9.95.  It's a sleek, charcoal gray colored storage clip board with a calculator on top.

My husband thinks that's silly - to have the calculator on top - but I see it as very space efficient - it leaves more room inside for all of my essentials!

So the next time you see me on the road, I'll be ready to conduct on-the-spot real estate without digging under the seats for a pen!

My handy-dandy-clip board has all of my essentials:

  • Legal pad on top for taking notes and jotting things down
  • Calculator for quick math work - always on top, never to get lost or stolen by my kids again
  • Several pens, a pencil, and a highlighter
  • Mini stapler, a staple remover, and paper clips. Oh, and white out, just in case...
  • Scotch tape (you never know when you want to tape a note to someone's door!)
  • Business cards (duh) but also some other business cards, like the mortgage guy I like to work with.
  • All important Consumer  Notice - I have a few copies of these, as well as some blank Non-Exclusive Buyer Agency Agreements, so that if we meet spontaneously, we can get legal and start right away!.  I also have one or two Offer to Purchase forms as well...and a some blank Listing Contracts.  It pays to be prepared!
  • Post-it Notes (until my daughter finds them and writes messages to her bunny collection or something.)
  • Advil Liqua Gels.
  • Blank cards for my Rolodex.  I like to have hard copies of addresses, because I can't always get on the computer.  Get the contact info directly on the card first, then you won't have to write it twice! Handy tip:  Staple someone's business card to a Rolodex card...then you don't have to write at all!

The only thing that doesn't fit is my tape measure, but that's always in the glove box...

Here is my little portable desktop.  It's just right - just the right size and keeps me always ready to do business onClipboard the fly - that's what it's all about, isn't it?  Being ready for your customers when they're ready for you?

I'm always ready to assist customers - feel free to contact me any time!

You look very organized!!  I just added a digital voice recorder to my arsenal and it sure beats fishing around for that pen when I'm on the road.

OOO, Marchel...that sounds GREAT, and you can do it while you drive!

I only sound organized, and only my clip board and client files are organized...my house is another story all together!

Great idea - I'm always writing on the back of a gas receipt, and then it gets wet from the condensation of my necessary drink  and the ink all runs together. Believe it or not, I'm high tech, but I'm not going to pull out my laptop to record a number. Maybe a voice recorder is the way to go, but then I have to listen to it, I have u trouble fumbling through all the voicemails I save?!?!?!

I love this low-tech but high on function solution. I have wanted one for oh about 2 years now. I don't know why I haven't bought one yet. Maybe your daughter can send messages to my daughter instead of throwing them out the window! The voice recorder is a good idea as well. My newest phone has that feature I just need to remember what buttons to push!

Karen, Very good stuff! Thanks for sharing. Even though high tech with a tablet pc & treo700p, I keep a folder with paper backup stuff. Your system seems so perfect. BTW a digital measurer would fit in your case, just in case...

Ok, I am off to Walmart to find my perfect "on the go desk".

Karen...

You have your hands full with that little girl. She is going to grow up to a woman to be 'reckoned' with.

Thank you for sharing that with me. I enjoyed that. Cracked me up :)

TLW- sorry, I got sidetracked!  I'll probably write my new post tonight.  I have some beautiful pictures from my rail road river walk, and need to optimize them.  Yes, my youngest gal is definitely a force to be reckoned with.  One of my friends said "I hope I'm still around when she grows up, I can't wait to see how she turns out!"  LOL

Margaret, Ashley, Irene & Annie:  Thanks for stopping by and yeah, I recommend this board.  It is GREAT!!!  The digital measurer I have is a little to chunky to fit in the clipboard though.  And it's also...funky.  It gives me bizarre readings and I end up using the old metal tape measure anyway!  LOL

That's a great idea. I use me car as an office as well. I will try this out. I,m sure it's betters than pens and little notes pads flying all over my back seat!

Tina, it is a HUGE help to be able to grab a pen without having to dig under the seat!  The only problem is I forget to put the pen BACK!

I love that idea, Karen!  I'm still driving a little Corolla, and there's just NO ROOM in that go-cart.  And just today while driving around on broker's tour, I saw some FSBO's and wished I'd had something to write on.  But going down the road at 35 mph with cars behind you...well, it's still hard.  I DO like the idea of the voice recorder!

LOL@ your "go cart"!   I was thinking of eventually getting something smaller than my Honda Van, until I rode in someone else's little "go cart".  I felt almost claustrophobic!  And I used to drive a Camaro - talk about no room!

Man, I'm getting old!  Next thing you know, I'll want to get something huge like my Uncle Lewis' old 1976 Ford LTD!  LOL!

We called them "boats", didn't we??  LOL  Mine would be a Kayak built for 1...and a small one, at that!  I finally put a tool box in the back seat...for all those little "real estate agent" things that come up...and it takes up half the floor!  My signs fill the entire trunk!!  Ok...that's the next blog search -- to lease or to buy??  :)

Sue - yes, a big boat!  Uncle's was more like a river barge.  LOL!

I don't think I can give up my van, as I love the storage behind the back seat - it hides a LOT of stuff!

And my vote:  buy a good used car that can be paid off in a year's time.  Then you don't have to worry about a monthly payment for long!

I bought the go-cart 4 summers ago...it's a 1998.  So I haven't really had a car payment since...oh...1994??  I've been VERY spoiled!!  : )  But I sure do find OTHER things to spend my $$ on!

Karen, this looks like a great idea.  I would suggest something else to store inside that might make it even easier than trying to write and drive or have someone else do it.  Get a digital recorder that you can just record FSBO numbers into.  This will also allow you to give yourself some notes about the home without having to stop and write it down.  Thanks for the tip though.  I can definitely use one for my car.

Sue, I never run out of things to spend my money on!!!!  Never!  Till the day I die, I will always be able to spend money on SOMETHING!  LOL!

Adam - I keep hearing about these voice recorders and prolly should get one.  I'm progressive thinking in most other things, may as well with this too! thanks for stopping by!
