Slow Housing Market? Take To The Hills!

Browsing here and there through the innumerable blogs on ActiveRain gives me the same feeling as spending the afternoon at the public library.  I know there is more content then I am immediately looking for, and I know where I am likely to find something of interest by one of my favorite authors.  I was walking down these virtual halls today and I came across a post or two mentioning the slowing down of the housing market this year.  I spent a moment thinking about how this natural ebb was effecting my life and business here in Asheville, North Carolina.

It is true that the market here is still really good but it is also true that the market is feeling the influence of the nation wide climate.  One way that I have seen it manifest itself is that people have started thinking more long term about their investments here.  Instead of just picking up and moving here in mass like the general exodus of the last several years, my clients are looking to take to the hills for land.  It seems to me that a common client now is looking for a place that "speaks to them", a place that gives them an opportunity to build their dreams here in the mountains.  At the same time this gives me a chance to get out into the woods with dreamers and idealists; people with ears for the land to speak to and eyes looking to the future, like Thoreau when he first cast his gaze on Walden Pond.

It makes sense, land has been appreciating here so quickly the last several years, it seems logical to get in now and ride the wave while the national housing market catches back up.

Again, I am so happy to make a living doing what I love.

It seems the market hits a low every 12 years.  We seem to be in one of those lows.  We will come out of it soon...I hope.

Thoreau and the other transcendentalists never saw Lake Tahoe. Sam Clemens did, but that was later. We're just a little bigger than Walden Pond.

Your neck of the woods around Asheville is really gorgeous too. Both of us have got great hills to take folks too.

Gabe, I agree. Land is always, always a good investment. We just have to take advantage at the best possible time.

Gabe - It seems much of NC is "somewhat" insulated from the national RE market negativity. Forbes recently called Raleigh the "Best Market for Home Sellers". Unfortunately, those relocating to our market bring the effects of their market with them. Now more than ever, people come to the Triangle with the malady of a "home for sale back home" and no resources to buy immediately. Short-term renters are starting outnumber buyers. That's the unfortunate halo-effect of a sour national market!

Good post!

I am seeing some of that in the Lake Norman area as well; especially because waterfront properties have gotten more expensvie.  I have a number of long-term buyers looking for land now that they can build on when they are ready to move.  Hey, we should have a North Carolina blogging gathering.  I'm always looking for an excuse to visit Ashville!

Gabe, I prefer land over investment properties any day... It may not cash flow but it doesn't talk back either.

Gabe - love the thoughts in this post, and of course the pictures are wonderful.  I was just in your area last week - it is gorgeous and I can see how it 'speaks' to people.

Congrats on the featured post!
