I start this article with great pride and joy! One year ago, a magnificent group of local Pawleys Island, SC volunteers and I started the first Annual St. Christopher's Children 5k Race.

Starting a 5k charity based race was no easy task, but we were all up for the challenge! With my co-race coordinator Melissa Dunn and me, Jennifer Grant, We tackled what seemed to be the impossible last year. We put together a first ever 5k race in 6 weeks. We knew this would be an arduous task, but thinking of all the abused, abandoned and needy children right in our own Pawleys Island/Georgetown county area, kept us fueled! We had an amazing event, especially considering the time given. We had tremendous outpouring from our community sponsor's. We called on them and they answered!! I believe we had close to 72 participants our first year, with Olympian and world record holder, Zola Bud as Grand Marshall of our race.

I am proud to announce St. Christopher's Children just held their 2nd Annual 5k race on May 1st, 2010. The sponsors once again stepped up, but even more so and the participants increased by 30+. Due to my extremely busy schedule after serving a year term on the Board of Directors for St. Christopher's Children, I stepped down, although I continue to support them in many year, including the Pawleys Island Women in Business. Melissa Dunn and Doug Weiss served as co-coordinators of the race this year.

Founder Bob Pelletier of Pawleys Island, Willbrook Plantation, said "This organization has a network of 18 schools in Georgetown County. This event is about the needs of children." Pelletier said the goal for 2010 is to help at least 600 of the approximately 800 abused, abandoned, and economically deprived children scattered throughout the county who require assistance. "With the expanded financial support of the community, we will meet this goal," Pelletier said. (compliments of Lloyd Mackall)

You really can't imagine the conditions some children live in...The organization is 100% volunteer driven and a testament to the people that live in our Pawleys Island communities! This is just one of the many, many examples of why I love living in Pawleys Island, SC. I love the people, the outpouring of care and sense of pride among those fortunate people that live here.
