What a great feeling to eat veggies from your own garden! They taste better, no chemicals and it is much less expensive than buying at the grocery store! So how do you start? Here are some tips to get you on your way to your own backyard veggie garden:
#1 - Make a plan. Notice what area of our backyard gets a minimum of 6 hours of sunlight per day. You obviously want a level area as well; so you don't get any large puddles in the midst of your garden. Also keep in mind that being close to a water source will come in handy as well.
#2 - Prepare your soil. It is important to have well drained soil. You want to take out alot of rocks and sticks from your area. You can always add fertilizer, compost etc to help the soil. Remember to not till or plow your soil when the ground is wet! This is a no no and will effect the quality of your soil. Once you have the soil prepared you are one step closer to having some veggies!
#3 - Using your plan you made in step one, start marking out your areas. Put in stout stakes where you will have climbing items such as beans and peas. Don't forget to leave pathways to give you clear access to all your veggies once they are grown. Planting depth and spaces are critical. Be sure to tag and mark your plants so you will know what to expect when the plants start growing.
#4 - Maintain - You want to be sure and maintain your garden as it grows! In drought times be sure to give exta water. Mulch can help prevent weeds and conserve the water in the soil. Try not to use any pesticides on plants once they have fruited if at all possible. Be sure to pull weeds as they sprout and get the roots. Weeds will deprive your garden of water and nutrition!
Now that you have the fundamentals! Get going on your Veggie Garden. I'm getting ready to start mine. I have chosen an above ground or raised garden similar to this:
Once complete all you have to do is sit back (after the weeding is done) and enjoy!
