I have noticed this. I now seem to get more mesages on my face book account than my gmail. Thats a problem since I check my gmail more often

I want to show you two charts from two different periods in time.  They're not exactly apples to apples (I explain why at bottom of post).  But regardless they point to something very clear...

My point - even if SEO is working well for you today, you need to start paying attention to Facebook.

Caveats - I realize these comparisons aren't completely apples to apples:

- First, Hitwise and Alexa are measuring slightly different things. Hitwise is measuring "Market Share" which they define as "...the percentage of online traffic to the domain or category..." and Alexa is measuring "Reach" which they define as "...the percentage of all Internet users who visit a given site." IMO, this discrepancy is immaterial in relation to the point I'm making, but you can use your own judgement.

- Second, Facebook is not yet in a position to substitute for Google in search they way Google was for Yahoo!.  But I think the analogy still holds well.  Yahoo! was not simply a search engine at that time either.  It was the gateway to the web of the day, and that's what we're talking about.  The fact that it was surpassed by Google could mean people only care about search and therefore it will always be the killer app on the web...or it could meant that people's requirements for their preferred gateway evolve.  I strongly believe the latter.

I think no matter how you slice it, these are two charts showing a challenger quickly outpacing an incumbent.  What do you think?
