3 Hours Before The War

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with Daytona Condo Realty, 386-405-4408

I am looking at the calendar and it shows: 6/22/2010.

June 22. It is 1 A.M. now.

On June 22, 1941 at 1 A.M. my then 22- year old mom was sleeping in a small town on the Ukrainian border. She was on a summer internship at a local hospital. She just finished her 4th year in Medical School and had one year ahead.

She still had 3 hours before the life has changed for her, for her family, for her country... There were 3 more hours before the howling whistling sounds of falling bombs would awake the town, and she, who specialized in pediatrics, had to step to the operating table and take the scalpel to treat wounded military from a nearby airfield… 3 hours before all that chaos, destruction and death…

It was a long war ahead. For my mom it started with the first bomb dropped by Nazi Germany. There were 1,465 days ahead. On June 22, 1941 her parents were still alive. My grandmother was executed in a ravine in Baby Yar in Kiev in less than 4 months in September… with hundreds of thousands of other Jews…She came to Kiev from a small town to take care of her daughters. She made sure they ran.

My grandfather was waiting for her in Malin, a small provincial town not far from Kiev. She never came. Instead Nazi came. The rounded all the Jews and packed them all in the home where our family lived, and then put the house on fire… they burned them alive.

I never had grandparents in my life, and they never knew me…

It was just the beginning of this war

No blame…but still tears

It was 69 years ago today…

I will always remember that day… 10 years before I was born… which was a lucky chance considering the circumstances...

Jon, I have many Ukranian friends in the Chicago area and there is so much history of Ukraine that the world just seems to selectively ignore.  I didn't know and understand about Stalin's forced starvation of millions of Ukraine citizens until a few years ago.  The Ukrainian museum in Chicago is full of incredible (and horrific) history and beautiful and amazing artwork.  Thank you for sharing this.

Don - This is the history that was part of life and we did not really understand it. I did not find anything strange in having only a mom, not having grandparents, seeing those men with amputated limbs set on a wide board with 4 bearings for the wheels, with the cap on the ground, asking for change...

Kathryn - yes, some denied it happened. Not only in Iran, in Russia as well. They do not want to be bothered.

They have bread an butter to put on top of bread, and that's it

People got killed? Not me... It is none of my business... until it is, and it is too late...

Mike - thank you, you said it very well. My grandchildren can't imagine it, and this is the best thing for them. They do not have to face any of that.

I was not touched by the events, I was just grazed on the outlet, but whether we understood it or not, it affected all of us. Some try to forget, some try to remember and the whole spectrum in between

First hand knowledge of history is SO important.  Knowing what people felt and how they reacted to the world around them is much more important than dry facts...

Jon...You pulled at my heart strings.  This is one time in history that must never be forgotten, and in some ways it has been.  My heart goes out ot you and your family.

William - "the evil of that day is still growing , even to this day." It is, and it is real, and we tend to think that bad things are always in the past...

Elizabeth - I am not adamant about it. Companies that were at that time, had nochoice. People running them were different people.

I drive Mercedes, and I am sure use a lot of products made by companies, that were involved in the economy of the war

It is a touchy issue

Deborah - there was  that thing with acknowledging fashism as evil. Never the same with acknowldging Soviet cosialism as equal evil, which it sure was

Jon- You're Jewish? That's awesome. I think you've said you're an atheist, but if you're at all in touch with your Jewish roots, I'd love to hear about that!

Lisa - that is a confusing thing with Russian Jews. In the Soviet Uion (and today in Russia) it is not about a religion, and in that sense when I was in the USSR, we were all atheists simply because the government had only one religion for the country: socialism and communism.

However, a Jew was a nationality and it was specified on the first page of our inner passports, that we had to have with us. So, there were Russians, Ukrainian, Kyrghiz, Uzbek, and Jew, even though there was no related country of origin.

So, I am a Jew (in that sense), but not Jewish (if we are talking about religion).

It is a usual confusion here, as here Jewish means religion, as I understand. As for religion, I know nothing.

My mom did not want me to knowing anything about being Jewish, as she wanted to protect me, my country did not want me to even think about it, so here's the final product, that knows nothing about it.

Lane - that's, of course, true, but I have met people who  successfuly "forgot" all this even though their families were affected. They simply have chosen to filter all the "negative" and not to think about it. And there are so many of them in the former Soviet Union.

As long as they have food, they would tend not to remember the dead. And this was one of the reasons it could even happen. people were divided, and were taken one by one, but the next hoped that they would not take him

Jon-thank you for sharing that personal part of your family.  I know quite a few people that have been affected by that bit of history and it breaks my heart.   It makes what family you have and have had over the years that much more precious.

Jon - I'm acquained with the story of Babi Yar. For me, the event is in history books. For you, it is your family history. And now, through you, it is no longer just in history books. My grandfather was born in a small town called Rakitna outside Kiev. He came to America in 1904 as a 5-year-old with his entire family. He recounted stories of pogroms in his village and how his family hid in the night, very reminiscent of the wedding scene in The Fiddler on the Roof. It's a small part of my family history. Bad enough but nothing compared to the Holocaust. Thank you for your story.

Judy - as if it wasn't bad enough in 1904, things actually got worse and the pogroms in 1919 were all too common. The civil war was raging and both sides were involved in pogroms.

In 1919 the family decided to move from Brusilov, where my mom was born, to Malin, which was a bigger place and more secure.

On the way they were stopped by those rascals, took what they thought was of value. Their boss tried to grab my mom, who was only a month old, but her mother did not let her go. He got angry and swiped his sable, but she covered the baby. He cut her shoulder, but my mom was not hurt. My grandmother survived that encounter.
