goal! in the net and of the mind

Four years ago I took to the basement treadmill and charted my path toward wellness and World Cup enjoyment in the wee hours of the morning. What I remember most about the experience was the way my feet occasionally got tied up on the treadmill in Edgewater as the games took place in Korea.

Think about it, running a straight line on a tread mill while watching a soccer ball bounce around the field is about as easy as keeping your balance atop a sidewalk filled with ball bearings. Several times last second grabs of the side bars prevented nose plants.

This year my viewing position is a bit more grounded, orbiting my sons' breakfasts as I watch the proceedings half a world away in South Africa. The match between our USA home team and Algeria just ended with the Americans prevailing in a last minute goal.

Allegiance is a funny thing. I don't know any of the members of the team. Most of them are years younger than me. But here I was perched adjacent to the as-large-as-life screen tv to watch the match, groaning with balls bouncing off the post, applauding outstanding saves by both goalies, exasperated at missed calls, and sharply clapping and lifting Lucas when a final thrust in the added minutes resulted in a goal by veteran player Landon Donovan.

Goal!

And so the American team scores a goal and achieves a goal - advancing to the next round of the World Cup.

Goals are funny. Whether the type that lands in the net for wins by the USA soccer team or the Hawks in their quest for the Stanley Cup, or the type each of us conjures up about what we want and what we want to achieve, they serve the role of a pole star, guiding us forward so long as we bear them in mind.

Sometimes, though, as we try to make headway toward our original goal common sense fuels a green shoot of reason and prompts us to shift gears and alter our approach. It happened recently with one of my listings where the renter-occupied premises shouted out for a new way. And so we called in the deep cleaning crew, met painters for single wall highlighting and orchestrated the staging of this Lakeview condo.

And so we met our first goal of warming up the place. And now we move forward toward our second goal - to introduce the place to the next person who will call it home.

In other words, sell the condo.
