Bp Oil Spill When Will It Ever End? Any Estimates?
A few nights ago, Kevin Costner on Larry King Live said a very odd thing!
"We don't know when that thing is going to stop, that thing that is leaking."
"we can be sitting on this thing for a life time?"
That is the most horrific answer one could possibly think of!
Does he know something we don't?
What would happen to the Gulf, It could be the next dead sea!
Beach property in the Gulf will be next to plummet?
Hi Vick~ The thought of it becoming the next dead sea is such a horrible one! I for one had dreams of retiring at the beach, but now I am not sure about that.....
Vick: it's shocking how we've gotten used to it. Looks like the relief well venture is going to be the only way to staunch the flow.
I'm sure the thought of just how long we will be living with this is crossing a lot of peoples' minds. At the moment, I'm watching a show on Chernobyl. If Russia stopped that disaster from getting worse, and stop leaking radiation, the USA should be able to stop this oil leak.
Anne ~ HBO had a great Chernobyl documentary a couple of years ago called "Chernobyl Heart". At the time of the Chernobyl catastrophe only 5% of the fuel leaked, the other 95% is still in the reactor! YIKES! Still a ticking time bomb......
Unfortunately, Kevin Costner is probably right. I hope not, but it is a distinct possibility. Horrendous.
It is a major mess. I just do not see enough effort to clean up what we can.
I think what people don't understand is that the oil in the gulf is the equivalent of 1/1,000,000,000,000 of drop of oil in the volume of a bathtub.
In other words, your skin releases more oil in the bathtub than the oil spill has contributed to the gulf to this point.
People underestimate the size and recuperative powers of the planet we live on.
To answer the question, the leak will continue for years, or until the oil is harvested by an adjacent rig.
p.s. Kevin Costner is an airhead.
One more thing. Obama calls for a stop to deep water drilling, but recently gave 2 billion dollars to Petrobras (brazilian oil exploration company) which is currently drilling to almost 3 times the depth of the gulf leak (about 14,000 feet deep). Look it up on google and get enlightened on this guy.
Oh yes... and guess who came knocking when they thought we wouldn't be using our oil rigs due to the Obama drilling moratorium (so they could lease and use the rigs we wouldn't)... that's right, Petrobras!

Thanks for the stimulating post and your concerns about the short term and long term effects of the oil leak on the Gulf and possibly the Atlantic Coast.
I think that some commenters are short sighted on the impact to the environment and the people being effected. And, by the way, the United States government gave Petrobras 2 billion dollars? Are you sure it wasn't an investment company linked to another president and his family? If we are so sure of the facts, we should be more specific than just saying "look it up on Google".

Hi Vick, I agree with Elite. It's a devastating mess, and I don't think we are doing all that can be done to clean up fast enough to encourage it not to spread and hit the beautiful shores. We cannot underestimate the impact on the lives this has had on the people in the fishing and tourism industry in the Gulf, nor the animal life that has been harmed by the oil spill. This is an enormous area that has been environmentally harmed. That is the billion dollar question, "When is it going to end?". We're just not getting the answers as to when the leak will stop, which is astounding to me.
