St. Charles - Where did the name come from?

Today at church, St. Pat's, I was reading the bulletin prior to mass and the name St. Pat & St. Charles crossed my vision path at the same time.  It made we wonder - I know very little about what the city I live in was named after.  I assumed it must be St. Charles which I knew nothing about.

I'm at home now and started doing some research.  To my surprise it doesn't seem like the name has anything to do with a Saint Charles.

From the St. Charles Heritage Center Website ( http://www.stcmuseum.org/historic7.html )
During late 1830s, it was discovered that there was another Charleston in downstate Illinois. The southern Charleston was slightly older than the northern. In 1839, it was suggested by S.S. Jones, a lawyer in town, that the name of the town be changed from Charleston to St. Charles.

Any Ideas?
