Sarasota's Bayfront Park

One of the amazing perks of living downtown is the proximity to one of the hubs of activity in Sarasota – the beautiful Bayfront Park, also known as Island Park.

The park juts out into Sarasota Bay from its location at Gulfstream and Ringling Boulevards. The park is surrounded by water, and is flanked by the marina on one side, and private boats anchored in open water to the south. Views of Siesta Key; Lido, Longboat and Bird Key; and the John Ringling Bridge are all around you. Simply turn around to view the clean and sparkling Sarasota skyline.  Benches under huge banyan trees offer old Florida style shade, many even swing under the trees branches – bring your lemonade! A huge expanse of grass in the center of the park is great for sunning or reading while working on your tan.

Although the park is a great place to relax, it is far from boring. Your kids will love Bayfront, as it has a new playground, and a fountain park which shoots cool water out of playful animal statues -a great way for both parents and kids to stay cool on hot days! The grass field is often transformed into an arena, when rousing games of ultimate frisbee or touch football take over. Picnic tables are placed throughout the area . The park is dog friendly, and is one of the best places in town to bring your pooch to socialize, make friends, or show off. The walking path around the park is also popular with skateboarders and roller bladers. Feel free to wade out into the water and fish, and don’t be surprised if you see a few dolphins jumping – this area is home to one of the largest dolphin populations in the area.

The iconic Marina Jack is located at the Park and is a great place to grab a drink and watch the boats go by. For more casual fare, O’Leary’s offers sandwiches and burgers, salads, and the popular new tiki bar for adult beverages. Jet skis and paddle boats can be rented from O’Leary’s; any type of boat is available for rental from the marina. You can even take a sunset dolphin cruise right from the park, on Sarasota’s own LeBarge.

The Park is also home to seasonal events, including the CoExist Art Exhibit and the yearly Sculpture exhibit which draw entries both locally and from all over the world. The Christmas boat parade sails right around Bayfront Park, and the  fireworks majestically explode over the Bay every chance we get to celebrate.

Being within walking distance to Sarasota’s Main Street, exploring the Park is just the beginning of your day! There is so much to do, we know Bayfront Island Park will become a favorite place for you and your family.
