George Mason High School, located in the City of Falls Church and the only high school in the city's school system, serves Falls Church City students in grades 8-12. Visible from Leesburg Pike, this high school is well known as a high achieving public school with small class sizes and stellar academics.
With enrollment in all 5 grades at just under 800, students receive a private school-type of experience at a public school price (free). This year, George Mason's Graduating class was 161 students. From the GMHS website, the class sizes for the 2008-09 school year were:
Grade 8: 164
Grade 9: 168
Grade 10: 142
Grade 11: 160
Grade 12: 158
For the 2009-10 school year, Newsweek has included George Mason High School in its list of America's Best High Schools. Coming in at number 44, it is the second most highly ranked public school in Virginia!
It is not just academics that make this school a great place for its students. During the 2009-10 school year, they walked away with 6 Virginia State Championships (Small School Group A)! Most recently the school won the state championship in Boys Soccer, Girls Soccer and Boys Tennis. For the Girl's Soccer team, it was the 3rd championship in a row! In the fall, the girls' Cross Country Team won the state title, in the winter the girls' basketball team won it's 2nd State Championship and the school's Scholastic Bowl team won its 4th Championship title.
