Meet the Newest Addition to our Farm, 8 ewe lambs

certified ewe lambsAfter a long trip to Louisiana and back, and an unexpected major break down on the way home, Captain Wayne and his Grandson Chris arrived back on the farm in Bonifay Florida well after midnight this past week with eight Scrapie Flock Certified lambs.

Settling down in the shade, you can see if you will look closely to the right of the lambs, "Cowboy", Captain Wayne's Great Pyrenees Dog, is laying between the lambs and the cows to keep them separated.  It didn't take long for Cowboy to get control of the situation.

Captain Wayne plans to phase out his cows and raise Certified Ewe Lambs.  This starter group will begin to breed this fall.  Each female is capable of producing 2 babies per year.

WOW - I guess I'm too tied to the internet - I thought this was a new Farmville critter!  Congratulations, Captain, and good luck with the venture.  I'm afraid all I know about sheep is the counting of them during the sleepy time of the evening.

Captain Wayne- Only your first photo is showing up on my computer, I'm wondering if it's me?  I had an unexpected breakdown getting home form Lousianna 5 years ago.  Was NO fun at all.

I love farm animals, but are you raising them for wool?  In florida?  or meat?

I live in Bonifay Florida.  Raising Sheep is all new to me too.  I grew up in the business of raising dairy cows on our farm in Indiana.  I'm a Real Estate Instructor but you know what they say.. "you can take the boy out of the farm but you cant take the farm out of the boy".

Tammy,
Thank you.  I believe the picture is showing up now.
It's certainly no fun to be stranded out on the interstate 500 miles from home.  Especially with a truck load of sheep.  We had a fuel pump go out on our truck and had to be towed to a repair shop and it ended up costing me over 400 dollars to have it fixed.

Smiling Bad Sheep Clip ArtThese Sheep are Registered and Certified.  I will be raising them to sell.

Katahdin Hair Sheep are a strong, adaptable, low maintenance sheep.  They do not produce fleece, therefore, do not require sheering.  They are medium in size.  Ewes have good mothering ability and lamb easily with no assistance.  Lambs are born alert and ready to nurse.  The breed is ideal for pasture lambing.  They require minimal parasite treatment.  Their smooth hair coat allows them to tolerate heat and humidity well.  In cold weather, they grow a thick winter coat which they shed in the summer.
Katahdin Hair Sheep are excellent meat sheep and make excellent show animals for 4-H and Vocational

Congratulations on your additon of 8 lambs.  It reminds me of my trip to Ireland where I saw lots of sheep and green pastures.

So cool!  I love the pictures too!  We used to live near an orchard growing up, and there was a 4H in the back...  Now its homes...  But it reminds me of being a kid!
