How to Research Crime Reports in Chesapeake, Virginia

By
Real Estate Agent with GreatNorfolkHomes.com (757) 560-0881

When helping people find a home in Chesapeake, Virginia, I am often asked the question, "Is this a safe neighborhood?" or "Is this a good neighborhood?"  My clients are often surprised when I tell them that I can't answer that question.  There are some legal reasons that I can't answer that (it can be called Steering which is strictly illegal).  Also, this is a very personal reflection and I am not the person to make that determination for anyone else.  For instance, what I consider to be an absolutely fine record for crimes committed, might not pass muster for my client.  That is why I always provide them with the website where the crime statistics for any area can be accessed by anyone with a laptop.

All information on crimes committed within Chesapeake can be accessed at the following website:

http://www.chesapeake.va.us/services/depart/police/police/crimeindex.shtml

Once you land on the entrance page above, you can click on the link for map of police beat locations to find the beat for the area in which you are interested. After you know the beat, just navigate back to the Crime Reports Information Page (link on the top right corner of the page) and search the neighborhood.  It is just that easy.  And then YOU can rest easy knowing that your new neighborhood is one that meets your defininition of "safe".

The word "safe" is always open to interpretation. It looks like Chesapeake has a great resource for home buyers!

Very nice post Kathryn, I always notice that many times people confuse a poor neighborhood, with a bad neighborhood. Too different things......

Aaron:  It is great that the internet has provided us access to a whole range of information.

Gerry:   Absolutely!  There are lots of neighborhoods in my area with modestly priced homes that are wonderful places to live.

Barbara:  How sweet! That must be a great way to learn about an area...straight from the police on the beat.  I love it!

Unfortunately, I doubt if any community in the country is completely crime free today

Renee:  It is a great tool and I make sure that all my buyers use it.  Better to know before you buy!

Bill:  How true!  I live in an area where people will leave their doors unlocked (bad idea in any location!) and we still have some crime.  Not much but it is still there.
