My tips on using mobile internet abroad

Working as an overseas real estate requires plenty of trips abroad and like most people I like to keep connected with the office and my family. Using mobile internet services whilst I am away has become increasingly important.

Whilst having access to mobile internet abroad, whether it is via a laptop or netbook or whether you are using one of the many smart phones available on the market, can be extremely convenient for many people (although don’t expect any US standard high speed internet) it can also work out to be very costly unless you do your research beforehand. It is therefore a good idea to know your limits and look at alternative options when it comes to using mobile internet on your travels abroad.

  • Always check with your provider whether they provide coverage in the destination that you are travelling to. If so, you can then check with them to find out what the costs are for using mobile internet in the chosen destination
  •  Be mindful of the cost of different activities when using mobile internet abroad. Surfing the internet and sending emails should not prove to be a problem but if you are thinking of streaming movies or downloading data rich files you may be heading for 'bill shock'
  • Check with your provider with regard to the best option for you. You may find that you are better off buying a data bundle so that you have more control over what you are using and spending whilst abroad
  •  Remember that there are other options available, such as free WiFi in various places in the destination that you are going to. Often the hotels will offer free WiFi in the communal areas or even in rooms, and there are generally also many bars, cafes, and restaurants that offer free WiFi or very cheap WiFi access.

It is also worth remember that roaming charges have been greatly reduced since mobile broadband first came out, and this makes it easier and cheaper for many people to enjoy the ease and convenience of using mobile internet abroad. As long as you exercise common sense, do a little research before you go, and consider all of the options available to you there should be no need o worry about receiving shocking and unexpected bills upon your return. If you haven’t yet got mobile internet but you are thinking of taking it out in time to go abroad you can easily compare the charges from different providers for different destinations. This way you can see which one is going to work out cheapest for your needs.

Nicholas, thanks for the tips.  Even though rates have dropped a lot, I still find it more economical to just use the wifi at where I am at like you suggested.
