America's fattest cities lists are always prominently displayed on magazine cover pages. I imagine lists help sell publications. I know this headline caught my attention. Men's Health had such a list and story, America's Fattest Cities. My city, San Antonio, is in the top ten. We came in at a strong #7. We've been conditioned to want to be in the Top Ten when cities are being compared.
But to make the Top Ten in America's fattest cities-that takes some effort. Last weekend it dawned on me that I've been contributing to the fatness. As I pulled on one of my favorite trousers, I noticed they were feeling unusually snug in the legs, and waist. I also noticed the belt, I couldn't comfortably make it fit in its usual slot.
I try to watch what I eat. I watch it because it helps get the food from the plate to my mouth and keeps me from getting messy. I don't eat much fast food. I will admit, ice cream is a weakness. I've had a few bowls too many this summer.
The America's fattest cities list now has me on a mission to get my fitness plan back on track. I'm starting back slowly to reestablish better fitness habits. I've started back on my cardio-run/walk routine two to three days per week. I'll continue with my weight training, just bump up the intensity, and increase my water intake.
The goal is to drop this summer ten pounds by Halloween. Now by writing this down and making it public, I'm commited to helping my city move out of the top ten of America's fattest cities.
