Are you Aware that FACEBOOK just launched a new FEATURE called Facebook Places. It's a location based service that allows you to check-in using a mobile phone! It will then post your location to FACEBOOK.
Why would you want this? They say it would allow you to see what FACEBOOK FRIENDS are close by at any given time.
Sounds like it might be a lot of fun.....but what about the bad guys?
I'm not too sure I want EVERYONE to know when I am away from home! I know for sure I wouldn't want my children to use this FEATURE!
What you need to know is that this feature is enabled automatically. To change the settings, go to your FACEBOOK ACCOUNT and log-in. Go to the Accounts Menu and then select Privacy Settings. Select the Custom option on the left, then click the Customize Settings Link at the Bottom of the Page.
Now under the 'Things I share" section, find the Places I Check in Option. Now this is the section that allows others to see where you are! Who are you going to let see where you are? I'm setting mine to only ME! You can set it to Friends Only or you can select Specific Friends. The choice is Yours!
Your not finished yet! The next thing to CHECK OR UN-CHECK people here now option. This option will notify other Facebook users when you check in near them. It doesn't matter if they are on your Friend list or not. I recommend un-checking this feature.
ONE MORE IMPORTANT CHECK BOX!! There is one more sneaky little feature that FACEBOOK put in. Your friends can check you in WITHOUT your Permission. Keep scrolling down in the Privacy Settings to Things Others Share.
You'll see an option labeled Friends Can Check Me In To Places. Set that to Disabled. Now your friends can't share where you are.
