Why Did You Leave Me Behind?

By
Real Estate Agent with Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices - C. Dan Joyner 21498

I can think of little else that ANGERS me to the point of actually wanting to PHYSICALLY HURT someone more than finding an animal that has been abandoned by humans who once were its' caretaker.

I have been in real estate for over 20 years, and virtually all of that time been specializing in REO, bank foreclosures and distressed properties. I have been in THOUSANDS of abandoned properties, from the most modest mobile homes to the most lavish multi-million dollar mansions, and they all have one thing in common: people. REAL PEOPLE were once in them living real lives, with real children and real toys, sleeping in real beds, laughing at real supper tables, and real family pets running through the house and in the yard...

http://www.foreclosurepets.org/When we arrive on scene to MANY of these properties that folks have left, we are astounded to find what they have left behind. We can find everything from family photos to nice antique furniture. But the absolute worst is an abandoned pet! .  I wonder how anyone could ever leave a part of their family behind like that? One of the abandoned pets I found was a young dog. If we hadn't come a long, would he have died before someone took him home with them? He was tied to post with no shade, no water and no food.. It was in the summer and the temperatures were in the 90s... One of my buyer's agents took him home to love.. She named him "Mojo" .. He has made a great addition to her family

The above photo leads to a website where you can go to adopt pet that were abandoned, or post pets you have or have found that need a home.

It seems unbelievable that someone could leave their family pet behind like that.  The very least they can do it take the pet to a no kill shelter if they just absolutely can't take them with them.  Don't just leave them there to fend for themselves.

Larry - wow, 7 dogs.. now you have for sure done your part for shelter animals!! :)

Don & Judi - I have a cat from on of my reo listings from 15 years ago!! They are the best kitties ever!! They never forget what you did for them.

Ed & Barbara - good for you... my best cats have been strays or ones I have found at vacant homes.

Samantha - I agree.. And IF you do leave them, for heavens sake don't leave them tied up to starve to death!! at least let them free so they have a chance to find a home.!

Donna -  I hope I never find another pet left behind.. Twice I have been too late for the pet... it is heartbreaking.

Hi Shelia, an excellent post.  There needs to be more focus on this problem.  Pet Finders is an excellent site to locate a friend for life.

We had an very unfortunate example of this in Ocean County, NJ.  By the time it was discovered the pets were dead.  Thanks for posting this, and enabling the reblog, let's get the word out!

Thanks for sharing this link. One of my dogs was left behind at an REO that another agent had. She was so skinny, dehydrtated, and really shy around people when I got her, but she's a sweetheart now. The sad part is the animal shelter told the agent who found her that she'd probably be put down because her age, size/breed, and needed medical care made her unadoptable (she's a large Rottweiler mix and was probably 7-8 years old when we got her).

Laura - thanks for the reblog.. I hope the word gets out to those who need to hear it most!

Raine - It is so sad.. We try to only use the "no kill" shelters that don't put animals down.. They are hard to find though.

Thanks for posting this - I will re-blog.

Our local rescue got started when one of my agents became outraged over sellers having their dogs put to sleep because taking them on the move would be "inconvenient." Then, because she had talked with the listing agent and expressed her displeasure, he called her one day to come and get an abandoned dog.

She and I went to the abandoned rental and found the filthiest dog I'd ever seen. But no wonder - he was tied to a tree with nothing but dust to lay in. No food, no water. We couldn't decide on a breed - he had long, matted yellow hair - kind of curly.

My agent had a friend who was a groomer and she volunteered to clean him up - and when we went back we found a beautiful Cocker Spaniel. He was adopted that very day when our secretary took him along to pick up her son from day care.

That was the beginning of a group that now rescues several hundred cats and dogs each year.

About two years ago we adopted an older cat from the SPCA.  She had not been abandoned; however I still wonder how her previous owners could have just given her away.

Richard - I agree. I just don't understand as a pet lover how you can give up your pet. Even worse, How could you leave it behind in a bad situation.??

A lot of people should not have animals. We don't own them, we are simply their "person" and we have an obligation as such to care for them. Period.

They never have conditions for their love for us, and that should apply to us as well.

And there are so many "rescue" animals to be had, there is never any need to go to a store and buy an animal.

I just thought of another point. REALTORS with listings need to be EXTRA CAREFUL about warning buyers agents if there are pets in the house.

Just today we opened the door to a house, and zip, out goes the cat. Ever tried to catch someones else's cat? Well, we did get kitty back in the house. But there should have been a notice on the MLS listing AND a sign on the door or a note in the keysafe.

Think, people. Common sense.

Ann - As an animal lover, I don't understand it, but I would love to stop it!!!
