We just live in a world full of technology. You find a blogger on Active Rain that you truly like a lot, who brings you great information, you consider them to have a wonderful writing style, and that they write about interesting topics.  So okay, you can subscribe to that person here on AR, not a biggie.  You could also follow their posts many other ways, such as by an RSS feed, follow them on Facebook, on twitter, using other tools that help you follow more than one blog post from many other sites, etc, etc.

So what about getting minute to minute updates on that certain someone and just for the fact that you might not have an RSS feed to that site of theirs that you didn't know about. How about just getting all their updates all of the time. Such things as that person being mentioned in news articles, who might be a contributor on another blogging platform that you didn't know about, and so much more. Well, how about just listing their name in Google Alerts.

Google Alerts

What is Google Alerts? - Just a basic monitoring service offered by Google that automatically notifies users when new content from a blog, news, video, etc that matches a set of terms selected by the user. (click the google alerts link above to find out more)

It's very easy to set up and use. And if you aren't doing this now, you should set this up for yourself, typing in your own name and also some specific key words that you would want to follow. Why would you want to follow certain key words or topics?  I live in Haddonfield, New Jersey. If I was a realtor, maybe I would want to follow the news in the area and or those other realtors in my area blogging about Haddonfield. Just keeping an eye on your competition.  And that you would use such terms as Haddonfield New Jersey or real estate Haddonfield Jersey. So this way I can follow all news realated to Haddonfield New Jersey or even real estate topics. You can get as specific as you would like on any topic.

Another reason would be because I also write for Agent Genius and Mortgages Unzipped over at Zillow.  You might not know this, but if you were to use my name with Google Alerts, you would know this.

Here is the link to get started - Googl Alerts set up - Below is a box of what it looks like.

** Keep in mind, if you are worried about getting a lot of e-mails on a specific search term and such, you can filter that e-mail into a specific folder on many types of e-mail providers. **

Ahhh the power of Google I love it!  There is no limit to the google alerts you set up either.  I not only have "name" alerts I also have my community and a few real estate alerts set up.  You can keep up on the competition that way to see what they are posting or new listings in subdivisions, the possibilities are limitless. I am often surprised at what pops up via email alert.

Jeff,  This is good information shared here in this post for those who may not know about alerts or how they work!

Jeff - I have Google Alerts on my name.  However, I only receive far fewer alerts from Google than there are webpages with my name on it on the internet.

Google alerts are often the source of inspiration for a hyper-local blog post.  It's even been the source of relationships, such as the friendship I now enjoy with a local community leader who I first discovered through a google alert about his mountain-climbing.
