Huntsville, Ontario - Who Is The Man In The Picture? The Reveal

In My Post Who Is The Man In The Picture? with this week end being the 25 Annual Uxbridge Studio Tour I thought it might be fitting to see if any one could tell me who this man is and where this likeness can be found.

Ontario has a rich artistic history
of which this man is a part.

You will find his paintings in art galleries museums, and private collections. His work has been displayed in the National Gallery Of Canada. His paintings have fetched over a million dollars at auction.

Tom Thomson
August 5, 1877 - July 8, 1917

He Spent A lot of time in Algonquin Park in central and north central Ontario . He painted for about 1/6 of his life and only 3 Years full time. Most of his work was never signed and he produced less than 50 canvasas

While many believe he was a member of The Group of Seven he was not.

The Group Of Seven Consisted of

Varley, Jackson, Harris,  Johnston, Lismer, MacDonald Carmichael

Who Is That Man

Tom Thomson and Emily Carr were  associated with the Group of Seven, but were never official members

Juli Vosmik Did Her Homework she figured out who he was and where the pictures were taken. While I did not ask she like many thought he was a member of the group of seven. He was part of the group prior to WW1. Thompson died in 1917 and the remaining group started calling themselves the Group of Seven in 1919.

Hi Kathy - I had initially thought along the lines of the Group of Seven and Tom Thomson when I saw your original post but your post was talking about the Uxbridge Studio Tour and I couldn't think of any association of the Group of Seven in Uxbridge.  I didn't have any time to do research earlier.

Now, Huntsville certainly can narrow it down to Tom as would Canoe Lake in Algonquin Park.  I have enjoyed the Group of Seven's paintings for many years.

We had studied the Group of Seven, Tom and Emily way back in elementary school (or perhaps junior high) and had gone on a field trip to the McMichael Gallery in Kleinburg, Ontario at the time.  Of course, there is also the Varley Gallery on Main Street Unionville.  I should do a post on it one day.

Kathy, so my guess that it was Jacques Plante, the famous Montreal Canadian goalie was wrong? Jacques was a painter and smoked a pipe! lol

Marc - the clue for you would have been

"Ontario has a rich artistic history of which this man is a part."

As for a connection to Uxbridge there are pictures of him at Lake Scugog in Port Perry and he was "Born born in Claremont, Ontario, in a home on R.R. # 5, the sixth of ten children of John Thomson" source A Chronology of Tom Thomson's Life

both just outside of the Township of Uxbridge as it is today

It was more about the rich art history in Ontario than his connection to Uxbridge

Kathy,

That's very interesting. I had a client who cleaned up the artist studio for the Group of 7 when they were in Toronto.

He was given numerous paintings. He sold many far too early before they became as famous as they are today.

Hi Kathy, I particularly like Tom Thompson and A.Y. Jackson's paintings, but of course the Victoria artist was Emily Carr!

Brian - why is it when artists are alive many struggle to make a living at art but after they are gone their work escalates in value

Kathy,

My client sold most of his Group of 7 in the 60's before they really took off.

However, he took the money and bought a nice house in the right part of the city, so I don't think he lost out.

Brian - art, for many, is a luxury they can live without ..... a home they can live within
